Paramount's "Street Fighter" knocked out the competition at the U.K. and Ireland box office, debuting at number one with £2.3 million ($3.1 million). The figure comes from the weekend's official box office rankings.

Who rounded out the top five?

Universal's animated feature "Forgotten Island" opened in second place with $1.8 million. Indian superstar Rajinikanth's blockbuster "Jailer 2," released by TGS Cinemas Limited, bowed in third with $1.6 million.

Sony's psychological thriller "Verity," adapted from Colleen Hoover, placed fourth in its third frame, adding $1.5 million for a running total of $12.8 million. Universal's supernatural horror "Other Mommy" took fifth in its second weekend, earning $1.3 million and lifting its cumulative gross to $5.1 million.

The takeaway: three of the top five films were new releases, and two of those debuted above $1.6 million.

How did the mid-table perform?

Trafalgar Releasing's stage capture of "Hadestown: The Musical" opened sixth with $844,115, bringing its total — including earlier screenings — to $2 million. Disney's survival thriller "Whalefall," starring Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin, started in seventh with $691,000.

Paramount's action thriller "Heart of the Beast," with Brad Pitt and J.K. Simmons, held eighth in week four with $689,788, for a total of $8.6 million. Sony's franchise reboot "Resident Evil" placed ninth in its fifth session, adding $653,396 to reach $18.5 million — the highest cumulative total in the current top 10. Universal's "Sense and Sensibility" closed the list with $421,386 in its fourth frame, pushing its cume to $7.9 million.

The margin between "Whalefall" and "Heart of the Beast" was roughly $1,200 — one of the tightest seventh- and eighth-place splits on record for the chart.

What arrives this week?

Mid-week debuts begin Wednesday with three titles:

  • Zee Studios International's Indian comedy sequel "Godday Godday Chaa 2"
  • Tull Stories' Scottish Ballet feature "These Violent Delights," directed by Christopher Hampson and Oscar Sansom
  • Trafalgar Releasing's stage production of Noel Coward's "Fallen Angels"

Wide releases on Friday, January 23 span more than 300 locations and include:

  • Warner Bros.' DC horror thriller "Clayface"
  • Travis Knight's stop-motion fantasy "Wildwood" via Black Bear, voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali and Angela Bassett
  • Lionsgate U.K.'s comedy "Ghosts: The Possession of Button House"
  • Amazon MGM Studios' "Ali G: Who Iz I?"
  • Paramount's animated "Tad and the Magic Lamp"
  • 3000 Pictures' sci-fi drama "Klara and the Sun"

Specialized and festival rollouts open Friday: Mubi's triple bill of "Junk," Paweł Pawlikowski's "Fatherland" (starring Sandra Hüller and Hanns Zischler, 25+ locations) and Eleanor Coppola's documentary "Making Marie Antoinette" (featuring Sofia Coppola and Kirsten Dunst, 25+ screens); Netflix's "Possible Love," directed by Lee Chang-dong and starring Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu and Zo In-sung across 25+ sites; Jeanie Finlay's "All Rivers Spill Their Stories to the Sea"; "Children of the Wicker Man"; "Monster Mia"; "Udta Teer"; and "Bad Day At."

Park Circus anchors repertory programming with the 30th anniversary 4K restoration of Wes Craven's "Scream," starring Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, across 100+ screens.

Event cinema closes the frame

Event programming runs through the weekend. Friday brings "Blood Saga." Saturday features Disney's "Disney Junior Cinema Club 2026" alongside Trafalgar Releasing's broadcasts of "HYBE Cheering Party," Seventeen's world tour "NEW_" and Tomorrow X Together's "Act: Tomorrow."

Sunday concludes with Trafalgar Releasing's one-night-only live viewing of "BTS World Tour 'Arirang' in Buenos Aires," directed by Jungjae Ha, across 300+ locations. With K-pop event cinema occupying more screens than several narrative wide releases, the coming frame will test whether concert broadcasting can outdraw traditional theatrical openings.
