Verona's Teatro Filarmonico has announced its 2027 season: five operas, running from Mozart to Alberto Franchetti, with Luca Salsi, Francesco Meli, Gilda Fiume, Ana Maria Labin and Paolo Bordogna heading the casts.

The season opens on Jan. 17, 2027 and closes on Nov. 28, 2027. Opera programming spans January, March, April, October and November; three concert programs fill the gaps in late winter and spring.

Which operas are on the program?

The season opens with Giorgio Strehler's production of Mozart's "Die Entführung aus dem Serail," conducted by Enrico Onofri. The cast stars Henning Mosselman, Ana Maria Labin, Marco Ciaponi, Eleonora Bellocci, Enrico Casari and Peter Rose. Performances run Jan. 17-24, 2027.

Verdi's "Alzira" follows, directed by Manuel Renga and conducted by Renato Palumbo. Mariano Buccino, Claudio Sgura, Mauro Secci, Antonio Poli, Alessandro Abis, Gilda Fiume and Maria Laura Iacobellis sing. Dates: March 14-21, 2027.

Beethoven's "Fidelio" arrives in April, directed by Joan Anton Rechi and conducted by Marcus Bosch. The cast includes Gerrit Illenberger, James Rutherford, Thomas Mohr, Tineke Van Ingelgem, Sarah Traubel and Saverio Fiore. Performances run April 11-18, 2027.

Rossini's "Il Signor Bruschino" closes the opera season's first half in October, directed by Alberto Jona and conducted by Francesco Ommassini. Vincenzo Taormina, Vittoriana De Amicis, Paolo Bordogna, Matteo Macchioni, Maxim Mironov, Stefano Marchisio and Carlotta Vichi perform. Dates: Oct. 24-31, 2027.

The season's operatic finale is Franchetti's "Cristoforo Colombo," directed by Tomer Zvulun and conducted by Francesco Lanzillotta. Luca Salsi leads a cast that also includes Youngjun Park, Alessia Camarin, Pervin Chakar, Francesco Meli, Anthony Ciaramitaro, Gianluca Buratto and Alessandro Abis. Performances run Nov. 21-28, 2027.

What concert programming rounds out the season?

Three concert programs sit alongside the operas:

  • Jan. 29, 2027: Gianandrea Nosea conducts Brahms' "Ein deutsches Requiem."
  • Feb. 5-6, 2027: Wolfram Christ conducts Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde" with Anna Werle and Mirko Roschkowski.
  • April 30 and May 1, 2027: Stepan Armasar conducts a Wagner and Beethoven program.

What does the season signal?

The 2027 programming pairs repertory staples — Mozart, Beethoven, Rossini, Verdi — with a rare revival of Franchetti's "Cristoforo Colombo," anchored by two of Italy's most prominent tenors and baritones in Meli and Salsi. That November run, closing the season Nov. 21-28, gives Verona audiences the schedule's most star-driven casting.
