The Gilded Age Cast Records a Christmas Album, Not a Musical

HBO's "The Gilded Age" will release a Christmas album on Friday, November 6, performed by fifteen cast members of Julian Fellowes' period drama — the closest thing to a musical the series is likely to deliver.

"Voices of The Gilded Age: The Christmas Album" spans 15 tracks of "a new collection of beloved Christmas classics," alongside two original songs written by the album's producer, Desmond Child. The new compositions are "It's Been Real," performed by Donna Murphy, and "The World Needs Some Christmas," performed by Ben Ahlers, which is already available to stream.

The lineup reads like a Broadway season condensed into a single recording booth: Ben Ahlers, Christine Baranski, Laura Benanti, Denée Benton, Carrie Coon, Jordan Donica, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Donna Murphy, Kelli O'Hara, Taylor Richardson, Morgan Spector, Taylor Trensch and Adrienne Warren all appear.

The project resolves what fans of the show have long identified as a paradox. "The Gilded Age" casts some of the finest stage vocalists working today and then confines them to spoken dialogue. As Variety's coverage framed it, limiting performers of this caliber to the spoken word is "akin to gathering the world's Olympians and asking them all to play badminton."

Not everyone gets to sing. Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector, the show's Bertha and George Russell, are limited to reading "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," split into three parts and spaced across the album — though they appear to deliver the poem in character, describing hung stockings and dancing sugar plums.

The album's marquee voices receive showcase material. Christine Baranski, a Sondheim veteran, takes the solo "We Need a Little Christmas." Audra McDonald applies what the source calls her "staggering vocals" to "I Wonder As I Wander." Kelli O'Hara, a nine-time Tony nominee, contributes "I'll Be Home for Christmas" before joining fellow Tony winners McDonald and Murphy on "I Remember."

The source notes two conspicuous absences from the roster: Nathan Lane and Patrick Page.

A holiday record is a modest concession to fans who have pushed for a full musical episode — a format the series' structure does not easily accommodate. As the original report puts it, "The show's core constitution doesn't leave much wiggle room for genre experiments, let alone tonal shifts into full-on song-and-dance mode." The album suggests HBO has found a way to monetize the cast's Broadway pedigree without disturbing the drama itself.

Whether the experiment becomes an annual tradition or a one-off gesture, listeners will not have to choose between the two: Season 4 of "The Gilded Age" premieres November 1 on HBO, five days before the album's release.
