Universal has dated the fourth "Mummy" film for Oct. 15, 2027, and given it an official title: "The Mummy: The Book of the Dead." Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz return as Rick and Evie O'Connell, the studio confirmed. The title announcement lands 28 years after the franchise's 1999 launch.
The sequel marks Weisz's first "Mummy" appearance since 2001. She sat out 2008's "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," in which Fraser starred alone.
Who joins Fraser and Weisz on screen?
The cast list runs deep with franchise veterans. John Hannah, Kevin J. O'Connor and Oded Fehr — all fixtures of the earlier films — return alongside newer names Michael Johnston and Numan Acar. Plot details remain under wraps.
The series began with 1999's "The Mummy," a reboot of a Universal creature feature. It grossed blockbuster numbers and produced two sequels plus a spinoff:
- "The Mummy Returns" (2001)
- "The Scorpion King" (2002), starring Dwayne Johnson
- "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" (2008)
That is three films in nine years at the franchise's peak — a pace the new film will take nearly two decades to resume.
Who is directing the fourth chapter?
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo known as Radio Silence, direct from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. Radio Silence made its name with 2019's "Ready or Not" and revived the "Scream" franchise for Paramount in 2022. Coggeshall's credits include "The Family Plan" and "Orphan: First Kill."
The hiring signals a horror-comedy lean for a franchise that has always mixed scares with adventure, and it pairs Universal's oldest monster property with two of the genre's most bankable young filmmakers.
Who produces the film?
Sean Daniel produces, extending a run of five consecutive franchise films — including 2017's Tom Cruise-led reboot. That film failed with critics and audiences alike, and it ended Universal's plan for an interconnected "Dark Universe."
Additional producers include William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment, plus Clayton Townsend. Fraser executive produces alongside Jason F. Brown of Hivemind.
Fraser's producer credit gives the star direct creative stake in a franchise he anchored across three decades — a rarity for a fourth installment arriving this late in a series' life. The Oct. 15, 2027 date now stands as the franchise's test of whether nostalgia can revive a property whose last attempt collapsed.
