Theater Bonn has extended the contract of General Intendant Dr. Bernhard Helmich through the 2029-30 season.
The Council of the Federal City of Bonn announced the decision and approved the extension.
Helmich began his tenure in 2012. Under his leadership, the venue has developed into one of North Rhine-Westphalia's leading musical theater houses. In the 2025-26 season, Theater Bonn staged 462 performances and welcomed more than 213,000 visitors.
The extension arrives while Helmich directs the "Zukunftsagenda Bonner Bühnen" (Future Agenda for Bonn's Stages), a transformation process that will shape the future of the theater's physical facilities.
"The Council's approval sends a positive signal," Helmich said in a statement. "With the resulting planning stability, Theater Bonn—together with Bonn's cultural stakeholders—will now drive the transformation process forward in a sustainable manner."
Mayor Guido Déus praised the decision. "For many years, Dr. Helmich has stood for a strong artistic profile, successful audience engagement, and the dedicated development of Theater Bonn," Déus said. "His experience is a tremendous asset, especially during the upcoming transformation phase."
Helmich's continued leadership gives Theater Bonn institutional stability at a decisive moment. The theater's audience will also have a high-profile draw ahead: Anna Netrebko is scheduled to make her Theater Bonn debut.
With the contract secured through 2030, Helmich can now pursue the Future Agenda's structural overhaul with a mandate that stretches well beyond the planning stage.
