Three Films Lead the Best International Feature Oscar Race as Submissions Close
Spain's 'La Bola Negra,' Romania's Palme d'Or winner 'Fjord,' and Denmark's Golden Lion winner 'Woman Unknown' lead Variety's early best international feature Oscar predictions, updated Oct. 1, 2026.

Programme
- Three films lead Variety's early best international feature Oscar standings as of Oct. 1, 2026: Spain's 'La Bola Negra' (TIFF People's Choice), Romania's 'Fjord' (Palme d'Or), and Denmark's 'Woman Unknown' (Golden Lion).
- France will submit Cannes runner-up 'Minotaur' and South Korea will enter 'Possible Love,' whose director Lee Chang-dong won the Venice directing prize.
- The 99th Oscars will be held Sunday, March 14, 2027, at 7 p.m. ET on ABC, hosted by Conan O'Brien from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
- The Governors Awards on Nov. 15, 2026 will hand honorary Oscars to Glenn Close and Ridley Scott.
- Oscar nominations will be announced Thursday, Jan. 21, 2027, following shortlist voting on Dec. 7–11 and the shortlist announcement on Dec. 15.
Spain's "La Bola Negra," Romania's Palme d'Or winner "Fjord," and Denmark's Golden Lion winner "Woman Unknown" top Variety's early best international feature Oscar standings, updated Oct. 1, 2026.
The submission deadline for the category has passed, and the Academy will now wait for the full country-by-country tally. Until then, the festival circuit has supplied the strongest signals.
Which films lead Variety's early standings?
Variety's chief awards editor Clayton Davis publishes the Awards Circuit prediction pages, refreshed every Thursday. The list tracks industry momentum and shifts with new events and informal polls.
Three titles command the top of the field:
- "La Bola Negra" (Spain) — won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival
- "Fjord" (Romania) — claimed the Palme d'Or at Cannes
- "Woman Unknown" (Denmark) — won the Golden Lion at Venice
Two other contenders have built serious momentum. France will submit "Minotaur," the Cannes runner-up to "Fjord." South Korea enters "Possible Love," whose director Lee Chang-dong won the directing prize at Venice.
Why does "Woman Unknown" carry the biggest risk?
"Woman Unknown" still seeks U.S. distribution, Variety notes, and that absence leaves a hole in its campaign. Without a domestic distributor, a foreign-language film loses direct access to Academy voters and the press cycles that drive nominations.
By contrast, "La Bola Negra" and "Fjord" carry the two most reliable festival credentials in the international race. The TIFF People's Choice Award and the Cannes Palme d'Or have repeatedly translated into Oscar nominations over the last two decades.
When does the race narrow?
The Academy's calendar from November onward is tightly compressed:
- Governors Awards: Sunday, Nov. 15, 2026
- Preliminary shortlist voting: Dec. 7–11
- Shortlist announcement: Tuesday, Dec. 15
- Nominations voting: Jan. 11–15, 2027
- Nominations announcement: Thursday, Jan. 21, 2027
The 99th Oscars will air Sunday, March 14, 2027, at 7 p.m. ET on ABC, broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood to more than 200 territories. Conan O'Brien hosts.
What else shapes the season?
The Governors Awards on Nov. 15 will hand honorary Oscars to Glenn Close and Ridley Scott, drawing senior industry figures to Los Angeles before preliminary voting opens. The ceremony is not part of the competitive race but concentrates press attention at a useful moment.
For the contenders with locked distribution, the next move is converting European festival trophies into Academy votes during the December and January windows. For "Woman Unknown," the first task is finding a U.S. buyer. The Golden Lion alone cannot carry a film to a nomination if voters cannot see it.
