AFI will honor Tom Cruise, 64, with its 52nd Life Achievement Award at an April 24 gala in the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles. The award recognizes a career in the film industry, not a single franchise, and arrives while Cruise remains one of the industry’s most prominent stars. The résumé, apparently, is not finished.

Kathleen Kennedy, AFI’s board of trustees chair, said in a statement: “Tom Cruise is a global icon. As an actor and producer, he brings an extraordinary commitment to everything he does. What I especially admire is his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together.” Kennedy called him an extraordinary ambassador for American film around the world. She said it was AFI’s honor to present him with the award.

AFI’s account of Cruise’s career begins with leading roles in “Risky Business,” “Top Gun” and “The Color of Money” during the 1980s. Cruise then spent three decades playing Ethan Hunt, the unshakably determined secret agent at the center of the “Mission: Impossible” action series.

He starred in eight entries, taking on increasingly daredevil stunt work (dangerous physical action performed for a camera). Other blockbuster titles include “Rain Man,” “A Few Good Men,” “Collateral,” “Edge of Tomorrow” and “Interview with the Vampire,” giving AFI a résumé broader than the action-star label.

What does the award recognize?

The Life Achievement Award is AFI’s highest honor, recognizing a career in the film industry. John Ford was the first recipient in 1973. From Ford’s first award to Cruise’s April 24 gala, the honor gathers directors, actors and other film figures into a single, long-running roll of film achievement.

Notable recipients since Ford include:

  • Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, James Stewart and Steven Spielberg.
  • Martin Scorsese, Jack Lemmon, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep.
  • Jane Fonda and Diane Keaton.

More recent honorees include Julia Andrews, Nicole Kidman and Francis Ford Coppola.

This year’s AFI ceremony honored Eddie Murphy. A recording of the tribute later premiered on Netflix. The event included Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, Arsenio Hall, Spike Lee, Mike Myers, Chris Rock and Stevie Wonder among its presenters and performers.

Which Oscars sit behind the honor?

Cruise has three Academy Award nominations for acting:

  • Lead actor, 1989: “Born on the Fourth of July.”
  • Lead actor, 1996: “Jerry Maguire.”
  • Supporting actor, 1999: “Magnolia.”

His three acting nominations span a decade, with two in the lead category and one recognizing supporting work in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 1999 film “Magnolia.”

The Academy also nominated Cruise as a producer for 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” which was nominated for best picture (the Academy’s principal film award). In 2025, he received an honorary Oscar at the Academy’s annual Governor’s Awards (its ceremony for honorary distinctions).

What comes next for Cruise?

Cruise’s next two credits place an awards-season performance under Iñárritu’s direction and a sequel in his immediate future, so the April 24 gala will honor a career still visibly in motion.

Cruise returns to the awards conversation this year for his lead turn (a starring role) in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Digger.” He will next be seen in the sequel “Days of Thunder 2.”

The April 24 tribute arrives with “Digger” back in the awards conversation and “Days of Thunder 2” still ahead. A lifetime-achievement label, this time, comes with a sequel pending.
