Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have officially scored The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, David Fincher's new film written by Quentin Tarantino. Rumors circulated last month. Now the collaboration is confirmed.

The film reaches theaters on Nov. 25. It then moves to Netflix on Dec. 23.

Why the pairing matters

Reznor and Ross have now scored six of Fincher's films. The list includes The Social Network, Gone Girl, and Mank. The Social Network won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2011.

The duo has built a second ongoing director partnership in recent years. They scored the last four films directed by Luca Guadagnino, including Challengers and After the Hunt.

Takeaway: Reznor and Ross remain the most in-demand composing pair in American studio film, with two active director relationships running in parallel.

What is the film about?

The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth is a quasi-sequel to Tarantino's 2019 film Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood. The story is set in 1977, eight years after the events of that movie, which altered the events of the Tate-LaBianca murders committed by the Manson Family.

Brad Pitt reprises his role as the eponymous stuntman-turned-fixer. The cast also includes Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Timothy Olyphant, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

When can audiences get the story on the page?

Tarantino will publish a novelization of the Booth-centered film on Dec. 8. It follows his 2020s-era publishing track: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: A Novel appeared in 2021.

The timeline stacks three releases inside one month:

  • Nov. 25 — theatrical release of the film
  • Dec. 8 — Tarantino's novelization published
  • Dec. 23 — film arrives on Netflix

Are Reznor and Ross still active as Nine Inch Nails?

Yes, and at pace. As Nine Inch Nails, the pair released Nine Inch Noize, a collaborative record with Boys Noize, in April. Last September they released the Tron: Ares soundtrack — the first new Nine Inch Nails record in a half decade, roughly five years after its predecessor.

That puts their recent output at two band-related records within about seven months, on top of film work for both Fincher and Guadagnino.

The Nov. 25 theatrical opening will give listeners their first full exposure to the score, and the Dec. 23 Netflix date widens that audience to the streaming platform's global subscriber base.
