UK Leads International Emmy Nominations With 14 Nods

The United Kingdom leads this year's International Emmy Awards with 14 nominations, including Disney+'s "A Thousand Blows" for drama and Netflix's "Man vs Baby" for comedy. The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced 64 nominees across 16 categories on Wednesday, spanning 22 countries.

Brazil follows the UK with nine nominations, and Spain takes third place with five.

One conspicuous absence: Bell Media/Crave's "Heated Rivalry," which a Bell Media representative confirmed had been submitted. The series became a phenomenon earlier this year internationally and in the U.S., where it ran on HBO Max. Because it was a Canadian commission with no U.S. production partners, it was ineligible for the Television Academy's Primetime Emmy consideration — which left the International Emmys as its only route to awards recognition. It did not make the nominee list.

The Contenders

In drama, "A Thousand Blows" (The Story Collective / Matriarch Productions / Water & Power Productions / Disney+) is joined by France's "Carême" (VVZ / Shine Fiction / Apple TV), Argentina's "Menem" (Claxson / Amazon MGM Studios) and India's "Real Kashmir Football Club" (Sony LIV / Jaya Entertainment / Oshun Entertainment).

The comedy category pits the UK's "Man vs Baby" (Housesitter Productions / Netflix) against Argentina's "División Palermo — Season 2 [Community Squad]" (K&S Films / Netflix), Spain's "Old Dog, New Tricks" (Alea / Netflix) and India's "Vir Das: Fool Volume" (Zazu Production Inc / Netflix).

TV movie/mini-series nominees are Spain's "Anatomía de un Instante [The Anatomy of a Moment]" (Movistar Plus+ / DLO Producciones), South Korea's "Hyper Knife" (The Walt Disney Company Korea / CJ ENM Studios / Blaad), Brazil's "Máscaras de Oxigênio Não Cairão Automaticamente [Oxygen Masks Will Not Drop Down Automatically]" (Morena Filmes / Warner Bros. Discovery) and the UK's "Prisoner 951" (Dancing Ledge Productions Ltd for the BBC).

Acting Nominees

Best actor nominees: Javier Cámara for "Yakarta [Jakarta]" (Spain), Ricardo Darín for "The Eternaut" (Argentina), Ian Roberts for "A Kind of Madness" (South Africa) and Bobby Schofield for "Unforgivable" (United Kingdom).

Best actress nominees: Mona Mina Leon for "Holy Sh!t" (Belgium), Bárbara Mori for "Lucca's World" (Mexico), Park Ji-hyun for "You and Everything Else" (South Korea) and Sheridan Smith for "I Fought the Law" (United Kingdom).

Non-Fiction and Kids Programming

Arts programming nominees include Singapore's "Copy + Paste + Steal," Germany's "Der talentierte Mr. F," the UK's "Live Aid at 40: When Rock 'N' Roll Took on the World" and Brazil's "Passinho Foda — O Corre por Trás da Dança [Uncredited — The Story of Passinho]."

Documentary nominees feature "Louis Theroux: The Settlers" (United Kingdom), "Marcial Maciel: El Lobo de Dios" (Mexico), "One 'Orphan' Every Hour" (Singapore) and "Opioïdes, Business & Addiction [Addiction Criminals]" (France).

Current affairs nominees include two Al Jazeera entries — Qatar's "Al Jazeera Investigates: Hasina: 36 Days in July" and "Missing in Gaza" — alongside the UK's "Exposure: Breaking Ranks: Inside Israel's War" (ITV1) and Brazil's "Profissão Repórter: Feminice" (Globo). Sky News' "The World: 24 Hours in the Kill Zone" represents the UK in the news category, competing with Globo's "Fantástico: Return to Yanomami Land" and Portugal's "Lembra-te de Mim [Remember Me]" (TVI).

Kids' categories span animation (Brazil's "Irmão do Jorel — Season 5," Germany's "Lenas Hof," Japan's "My Melody & Kuromi," the UK's "The Scarecrows' Wedding"), factual and entertainment, and live-action, including "31 Minutos: Calurosa Navidad" from Chile and "Love at First Spike" from the Philippines.

Non-scripted entertainment nominees include "Ed Stafford's Rite of Passage" (China), "Educating Yorkshire — Season 2" (United Kingdom), "La Peor Vuelta al Mundo" (Mexico) and "Loups-Garous — Season 2" (France). Sports documentary nominees cover football (Brazil's "Baila, Vini"), cycling (Spain's "Temps Mort"), diving ("Tom Daley: 1.6 Seconds," United Kingdom) and South Africa's "The Philipstown Wirecar Grand Prix."

The telenovela category pits two Turkish entries from Ay Yapim — "Leyla" and "Uzak Sehir [Far Away]" — against Brazil's "Garota do Momento" and Spain's "Valle Salvaje — Season 2."

Academy Response

"The International Emmy Awards are as competitive as ever, with an outstanding range of entries from around the world vying for a coveted nomination," International Academy president and CEO Bruce L. Beyond the top three territories, nominees also came from Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, the Philippines, Portugal, Qatar, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea and Türkiye.

Winners will be announced at the 54th International Emmy Awards Gala in New York on Monday, Nov. 23, when the global television community will learn whether the UK converts its leading tally into statuettes — and whether programs from Globo to Al Jazeera to Netflix's international slate break through.
