Cappu Films announced international deals for the Chinese science-fiction action thriller “Variant” at TIFFCOM, the film market of the Tokyo International Film Festival. International Media Network (IMN) acquired the U.S. and Canadian rights. Other buyers covered Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Latin America, Poland, South Asia, Taiwan and Japan.

Cappu Films was still negotiating for territories that remained open. The company disclosed no deal terms. Its announcement gave territorial details but no release dates. It is a rights-market update, not a full rollout schedule.

Which territories changed hands?

Cappu Films’ TIFFCOM announcement divides the film among buyers like a routing map, with each distributor assigned a defined territory within the planned international rollout. The specific agreements were:

  • International Media Network (IMN) acquired rights for the United States and Canada.
  • MT Trading took Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland.
  • Blue Swan Entertainment secured Italy, Italian-speaking Switzerland, San Marino and Vatican City.
  • Great Movies acquired Latin America, while Media4Fun picked up the film for Poland.
  • Dimension Pictures took South Asia’s SAARC territories (the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation).
  • San Chi Films acquired Taiwan.
  • Bob Jones of IPA Asia brokered the Japan deal.

Cappu Films disclosed no deal terms. The announcement offers plenty of geography and no arithmetic. Cappu remained in talks with buyers over the open territories, leaving the distributor list provisional.

What is “Variant” about?

Cappu Films’ synopsis describes “Variant” as a science-fiction action thriller directed by Qilin Li. Jim Liu leads the cast with Shuting Yang and Philippe Joly. His credits include “The Farewell” and “Ip Man 4: The Finale,” as Cappu Films noted.

Jamie survives an alien creature’s attack while aboard a spacecraft. Twenty years after fleeing to Earth, he confronts a new variant of the creature. He must face the threat that wiped out his family.

The premise joins an immediate survival encounter with a 20-year gap, making the old attack both memory and returning danger at the center of his story. The synopsis offers a clear genre premise, but provides no further detail on the creature’s design or the scale of the threat.

What did Cappu say about the deal?

Cappu Films handles international sales and distribution, with a focus on independent filmmakers and genre titles capable of crossing borders, and values filmmaker relationships that continue from one project to the next.

“We’re delighted to bring ‘Variant’ to audiences across a growing number of international markets,” said Janice Woo of Cappu Films. “We had a great experience working with the director and production team on ‘Mutant,’ so it’s a pleasure to work together again on ‘Variant.’ We like building relationships with filmmakers that continue from one film to the next.”

The statement makes filmmaker continuity part of Cappu’s pitch, not incidental background. With talks continuing over the remaining territories, the next test is whether Cappu can convert those discussions into agreements, with deal terms still undisclosed.
