Sony Pictures Television says “Wheel of Fortune” averaged 8.59 million viewers in linear television in Season 44, up 17% from last year. The long-running syndicated game show also posted a 4.8 household rating, up 16%, according to the company.

Sony reports that streaming total viewers rose 78%, while viewers among adults 25-54 rose 29%. The company says Season 44 has reached nearly 37 million total viewers so far and calls “Wheel” the No. 1 entertainment program on TV.

Those figures establish Sony’s claim, not an independent verdict. Sony supplies no streaming average, platform-by-platform result or ranking method. It also does not separate the new gameplay from other factors, so the data cannot show that “Fortune Frenzy” caused the increase.

The show streams on Peacock, Hulu, Hulu on Disney+ and Canada’s Crave the day after broadcast.

“We’ve been very deliberate about using audience insights to inform how we evolve ‘Wheel of Fortune,’ introducing meaningful changes that keep the format fresh while protecting what has made the franchise so enduring,” said Sony Pictures TV president of game shows Suzanne Prete in a statement.

Prete called the audience growth and No. 1 entertainment-series ranking a strong validation of Sony’s approach at a time when the broader linear television market faces pressure.

She added:

“We’re particularly proud of the tremendous growth we’re seeing on streaming, which reflects our continued focus on expanding the reach of ‘Wheel’ and meeting audiences wherever and however they choose to watch.”

Her statement frames audience research and specific format changes as a deliberate response to pressure on linear television. Sony does not identify the insights behind “Fortune Frenzy.” The figures also do not separate the round’s effect from Sony’s wider distribution and marketing role.

What does Season 44 change for viewers?

Season 44 adds an opening round called “Fortune Frenzy.” Contestants receive 30 seconds to solve as many puzzles as possible. That produces more puzzles at the start. The announcement does not specify changes to prize money or to later rounds.

“Fortune Frenzy” is the only new feature the announcement describes in detail. For viewers, the practical change is a faster opening with more puzzles. The announcement does not establish a broader change to the game.

The distribution shift

Sony Pictures Television is taking over marketing, promotions and affiliate relations for “Wheel” starting this fall. CBS Media Ventures handled those duties last year, according to Sony.

Sony says the change follows a settlement reached a year ago after a long-running battle between CBS Media Ventures and Sony Pictures Television over distribution of “Wheel” and “Jeopardy.” Under the deal, Sony took over international distribution of “Wheel” last year. CBS keeps domestic distribution through 2027-2028, at which point Sony takes it over.

Production and reach

Sony Pictures Television produces “Wheel,” and CBS Media Ventures distributes it in syndication, including ABC-owned stations in key markets. Bellamie Blackstone serves as executive producer. Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White are hosts.

Those increases give Sony evidence of broader interest, but they do not establish why viewers stayed or returned. That limit matters because Sony is assuming control of promotion and affiliate relationships at the same time.

Sony’s next test arrives this fall, when its new marketing and affiliate role begins; the figures show a larger audience now, not whether Season 44’s gains will last.
