World Ballet Day returns on October 29, 2026, with the theme "How Stories Are Made." The 24-hour virtual event will stream performances, rehearsals and interviews free on participating companies' websites and social media.
Founded in 2014, the event began as a round-the-world collaborative livestream led by five companies: The Royal Ballet, The Australian Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada. Others joined soon after. In recent years, the format has loosened. Companies now host their own celebrations in their local time zones rather than passing a single relay broadcast across the planet.
What can viewers expect this year?
Behind-the-scenes footage and interviews remain the franchise. The Royal Ballet will livestream its daily company class and rehearsals, with a particular focus on studio life. The company will spotlight the coaches who pass classical ballet stories and choreography down to the next generation of dancers.
The National Ballet of Canada brings the fresher material. The company will unveil a new filmed version of David Dawson's On the Nature of Daylight pas de deux (a dance for two), plus a sneak preview of Dawson's new full-length ballet, The Beginning of Forever, ahead of its world premiere in June.
Who is taking part?
The 2026 lineup spans five continents, from Taipei to São Paulo to Cape Town:
Asia Pacific: The Australian Ballet; Ballet Indonesia Foundation; Bangkok City Ballet; Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan; The National Ballet of Japan; Royal New Zealand Ballet; Sydney Dance Company.
Europe: Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo; Dutch National Ballet; Finnish National Ballet; Norwegian National Ballet; Paris Opéra Ballet; Polish National Ballet; The Royal Danish Ballet; Staatsballett Hannover; Stuttgart Ballet; Teatro alla Scala; Vienna State Ballet.
United Kingdom: Acosta Dance Foundation; Birmingham Royal Ballet; English National Ballet; ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing); Northern Ballet; Royal Academy of Dance; The Royal Ballet; The Royal Ballet School.
Africa: Cape Town City Ballet NPC.
The Americas: Alonzo King LINES Ballet; American Ballet Theatre; Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico; Ballet Lubbock; BalletMet; Boston Ballet; Dance Theatre of Harlem; Les Grands Ballets; Nashville Ballet; The National Ballet of Canada; Orlando Ballet; Pacific Northwest Ballet; Sacramento Ballet; San Francisco Ballet; São Paulo Dance Company; Smuin Contemporary Ballet.
That's roughly 40 companies, and every stream costs nothing. Scheduling details for each time zone are available on the World Ballet Day website. The Dawson preview is the day's clear prize: a first look at a full-length premiere landing five months before the stage does.
