Al Pacino will receive SAG-AFTRA's Life Achievement Award at the Actor Awards ceremony on Feb. 28, 2027, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The union announced the honor on Tuesday, citing both his career and his humanitarian record.
The award is SAG-AFTRA's top tribute, given annually to an actor who fosters "the finest ideals of the acting profession," according to the union's own criteria. Pacino, the star of "Scarface," joins a roster of recipients selected by the 160,000-member performers' union year after year.
What does the honor recognize?
SAG-AFTRA framed the award around Pacino's reach across mediums. "Across film, television and the stage, Pacino has captivated audiences with transformative performances, creating some of the most memorable characters in entertainment history and has profoundly influenced generations of actors and culture itself," the union said in a statement.
The numbers behind the citation are unusually broad. Pacino holds one best actor Oscar, for "Scent of a Woman," alongside two Tony Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards and two Actor Awards from the union itself.
His other accolades include:
- The AFI Life Achievement Award
- The Golden Globes' Cecil B. DeMille Award
- A Kennedy Center Honor
- The Venice Career Golden Lion
His Oscar-nominated performances span five decades: "The Godfather," "Serpico," "The Godfather Part II," "Dog Day Afternoon," "...And Justice for All," "Dick Tracy," "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "The Irishman."
In plain terms, the citation covers nearly every major prize an American actor can hold.
What did Pacino and the union's president say?
SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin delivered the announcement in personal terms. "Like so many actors, I have spent my life in awe and appreciation of the force of nature that is Al Pacino," Astin said. "When you watch him perform, you are witnessing a student and a master. Al Pacino is an artist of extraordinary courage, intensity and heart whose work has always set an exceptional standard of skill and talent. All of that and he's just plain fun to watch. SAG-AFTRA is proud to celebrate Al Pacino with our union's highest honor."
Pacino responded with his own statement, reflecting on a career built on craft rather than celebrity. "I wondered and wandered most of my life but have always felt at home with a script and my fellow actors," Pacino said. "It's the work and the actors along the way that have been among the greatest joys of my life. It's an honor to be recognized by SAG-AFTRA in celebrating the journey."
What about the humanitarian record?
The award also cites work offstage. Pacino has supported the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles, received the Humanitarian Award from the Southern California Chapter of the Arthritis Center, and participated in disaster relief and global advocacy.
The union requires both dimensions — professional achievement and humanitarian service — for the prize. Pacino's record spans both.
The Feb. 28, 2027 ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium will mark the public centerpiece of the tribute, and it will double as a rare stage appearance by an actor who says he has always felt most at home with a script in hand.
