Soprano Angel Blue has announced a sabbatical from opera performances this season, triggering cast changes at both the Metropolitan Opera and the Royal Opera House.

Blue announced the news herself via social media. The two companies have responded with recastings for their productions of Verdi's "Otello" and "Aida."

What changes at the Met?

Adriana Gonzalez will sing Desdemona in "Otello" from January 11 to January 30. For "Aida," Ailyn Pérez and Marigona Qerkezi will share the title role for performances running March 9 through April 15, 2026.

The Met's "Otello" will also star Michael Fabiano and Amartuvshin Enkhbat. The "Aida" cast includes Michael Fabiano, Judit Kutasi, Quinn Kelsey, and Alexander Köpeczi.

What happens in London?

At the Royal Opera House, Blue has withdrawn from all performances of "Aida." Marigona Qerkezi will replace her there as well, giving the soprano the role on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Royal Opera House "Aida" will also feature Ivan Gyngazov, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Alexey Markov, Alexander Köpeczi, and Alexandros Stavrakakis.

Is Blue stepping away entirely?

No. While she will not sing opera this season, Blue said she will continue to perform in recital alongside Bryan Wagon. The sabbatical applies to staged opera work, not to concert appearances.

Who are the replacements?

Each incoming soprano brings direct experience with these roles:

  • Adriana Gonzalez recently made her New York debut with the Teatro Real and has performed to acclaim with the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
  • Ailyn Pérez is set to sing "Aida" in Houston and made her role debut in the part in Dresden.
  • Marigona Qerkezi is a recognized Verdi soprano who has performed at the Festival Verdi, the Royal Opera House, and Deutsche Oper Berlin, among other houses.

That pedigree matters for these particular assignments. "Otello" and "Aida" sit at the demanding end of the Verdi soprano repertory, and both productions now depend on singers who can deliver the roles on short notice at two major international houses.

What does this change for audiences?

Ticket holders lose one of today's most prominent Verdian sopranos, but the Met and Covent Garden have replaced her with singers who already know the parts. Pérez arrives with a role debut in Dresden behind her; Qerkezi steps into a house she has sung before. Gonzalez, for her part, brings fresh New York momentum from her Teatro Real debut.

The recasting also concentrates attention on Qerkezi, who now owns Aida at both the Met and the Royal Opera House within a single season. For a Verdi specialist, that's a significant platform. Whether Blue returns to these roles next season remains the open question her announcement left unanswered.
