Annapolis Opera will mount Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance" at Maryland Hall for two performances on Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 1 at 3 p.m.

The company named a 10-singer principal cast for the comic opera. David Macaluso sings Major-General Stanley. Luke Harnish takes The Pirate King. Brian Wallin plays Frederic. Helen Zhibing Huang performs Mabel.

Six additional singers—Emily Harmon, Bryan Bennett, Kelly DeLameter, Katie Procell, Patricia Hengen, and Alicia Woodberry—round out the ensemble. They will join the Annapolis Opera Chorus for the two-performance engagement.

Craig Kier conducts. Eve Summer directs for the stage.

Who leads the production team?

Conductor Craig Kier returns to the Annapolis pit for this Gilbert and Sullivan outing. Stage director Eve Summer will oversee the comic pacing across the two-performance run, working with 10 named principals and the company chorus.

Conductor Kier, stage director Summer, and musicologist Nicole Steinberg, Ph.D., together anchor three of the four educational touchpoints the company has scheduled from Oct. 10 through Nov. 1.

The two-night run pairs a comic-operatic staple with a four-event educational program that opens 20 days before curtain.

What is the Insight Series?

Annapolis Opera will present two "Insight Series" lectures in October, framed as opportunities to explore the history, music, and cultural significance behind each production.

The first event, "The Pirates of Penzance: A Story of Operatic Proportions," runs Oct. 10. The second, "Gilbert & Sullivan in America," runs Oct. 17 and features Jack Marshall, founder of the Georgetown Gilbert & Sullivan Society.

A third program, led by musicologist Nicole Steinberg, Ph.D., precedes each mainstage performance and addresses the broader impacts of operetta on the wider musical stage.

The company stated that the Insight Series reflects its commitment to making opera accessible and engaging for audiences of all experience levels, from first-time ticket holders to longtime subscribers.

How do the dates connect?

The educational and performance events run from Oct. 10 through Nov. 1, with the two lectures, the two pre-show musicologist talks, and the two mainstage performances distributed across that window.

The Oct. 17 lecture with Marshall lands 13 days before opening night. Marshall's Georgetown Gilbert & Sullivan Society provides the regional anchor for the company's pre-show outreach.

A musicologist-led talk before each of the two mainstage performances doubles the educational contact points, raising the total to four touchpoints for ticket holders who attend every program.

What does the run signal?

Annapolis Opera paired scholarly framing with a tight two-performance mainstage run rather than an extended festival. The format prioritizes depth of context over run length.

The company has now committed its full cast, conductor, and director to two performances and three pre-show lecture programs ahead of opening night at Maryland Hall.

The compressed October schedule leaves roughly one month to convert Insight Series attendance into mainstage ticket sales across the two announced performance dates.
