Apple TV has renewed "Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed" for a second season. The pickup secures the return of a series built on blackmail, murder and youth soccer, with Tatiana Maslany leading the cast as newly divorced mother Paula.

The show comes from creator and showrunner David J. Rosen. Apple Studios and Counterpart Studios produce. Executive producers include Rosen, director David Gordon Green, Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon and Bard Dorros of Anonymous Content, who developed the project.

The official logline describes the premise: Paula falls "down a dangerous rabbit hole of blackmail, murder and youth soccer" after her divorce. Convinced she has witnessed a crime, and fighting a custody battle and an identity crisis at the same time, Paula launches her own investigation. That investigation could expose a wider conspiracy — and might also hold the keys to rebuilding her family and her sense of self.

Who stars in Season 2?

Maslany anchors the ensemble. Jake Johnson plays Paula's ex-husband Karl. The cast also includes:

  • Murray Bartlett
  • Dolly De Leon
  • Brandon Flynn
  • Jessy Hodges
  • Jon Michael Hill
  • Charlie Hall
  • Kiarra Hamagami Goldberg
  • Nola Wallace

Rosen marked the renewal with a joke about the show's unusual origins. "We are delighted to continue the story of 'MPG' and deeply grateful to Apple and our incredible cast and crew. This is all pretty amazing for a show whose title came from a spam email," Rosen said in a statement.

What does the Season 1 twist mean for Season 2?

The renewal follows a finale that recast everything viewers thought they knew about Paula. Speaking to Variety, Rosen said the twist was planned from the start.

"I always intended it to be a reframing," Rosen said. "We've felt Paula is a reliable narrator, but we feel moments of unreliability. As Karl says over and over, she's eccentric, acting in a way that's not consistent. The audience is like, 'Screw you, Karl! She's going through a lot right now!' But what we come to realize in the end is that something more was afloat. Paula is more complicated than we thought."

What does this change for the viewer? A second season now inherits a protagonist the audience can no longer fully trust, and a conspiracy with room left to unravel. The show's blend of suburban satire and crime thriller has found a home at Apple, and the spam-email title that began as a joke has become a franchise in progress.
