Apple TV has added Brian d'Arcy James, Reed Birney and Gus Birney as recurring guest stars in its upcoming series "Guilty Creatures," Variety reported exclusively. The three join a cast already led by Julia Garner, with Lewis Pullman, Maddie Hasson, Mary-Louise Parker and Gabriel Basso in previously announced roles.

The series adapts Mikita Brottman's true crime book "Guilty Creatures: Sex, God, and Murder in Tallahassee, Florida." So this isn't an invented thriller — it's built on a documented case.

What is the show actually about?

The official logline tracks a torrid romance between two young, adulterous but God-fearing lovers, followed by a murder. It then follows the pair's unraveling lives and the emotional toll of living as killers for 18 years.

That 18-year span gives the adaptation its structure: it's less a whodunit than a psychological study of guilt over time. The material puts the burden on the writing and lead performances rather than on plot twists.

Who are the new arrivals?

  • Brian d'Arcy James, known for "The Copenhagen Test" and "Rabbit Rabbit."
  • Reed Birney, whose credits include "Blue Film" and "Silo."
  • Gus Birney, previously seen in "Shining Vale" and "Black Rabbit."

Variety lists their representatives as follows: James is repped by Gersh and Thruline; Reed Birney by Paradigm and Suskin/Karshan Management; Gus Birney by CESD and Suskin/Karshan Management.

Who is making it?

Tomorrow Studios, an ITV Studios partner, developed the project and brought it to Apple. Craig Gillespie is attached to direct and executive produce under his Fortunate Jack Productions banner. Sarah DeLappe ("Bodies Bodies Bodies," "The Regime") will write and executive produce.

Stuart Zicherman serves as showrunner and executive producer. Garner executive produces through her Alma Margo banner in addition to starring. Tomorrow Studios' Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements and Alissa Bachner executive produce alongside Annie Marter of Fortunate Jack and Brottman herself. Stephanie Laing executive produces and directs.

Both Fortunate Jack and Alma Margo operate under first-look deals with Tomorrow Studios, which ties the key creative parties to the studio beyond this single project.

What does this change for viewers?

The casting signals Apple's confidence in the material: pairing stage and character-screen veterans like the Birneys with a cast led by an Emmy winner in Garner suggests the series leans on ensemble acting rather than star spectacle. With Gillespie directing, DeLappe writing and Zicherman running the show, "Guilty Creatures" now has its full creative bench set — the next milestone to watch is a premiere date, which Apple has not yet announced.
