Season 3 of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” is under discussion at Apple TV and Legendary Television, with a new showrunner, new writers and new Titans proposed for the change, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

The talks remain preliminary. Sources said multiple people have been approached about taking over the showrunner role, which is the position in which an executive oversees a series’ creative and production direction. The report identifies no candidate and gives no indication that either company has committed to the season.

What would change in Season 3?

A proposed third season would amount to a substantial reset. It would introduce new Titans from Legendary’s Monsterverse, the connected universe of giant-monster stories. The plan resembles a production replacing its control room while keeping the same franchise and platform.

The proposed installment would change the showrunner and writing team and feature new Titans from Legendary’s Monsterverse, while leaving the status of characters from the first two seasons unresolved, according to the person familiar with the talks.

No decision has been made on whether those characters would carry into a third. Their return remains unresolved.

The source has named neither possible successors nor returning characters. It also leaves open how any new Titans would relate to the first two seasons. Those choices would shape the story rather than merely its production credits. None can be treated as settled until Apple TV and Legendary Television confirm the season and a new creative team defines its direction.

The report dates the series’ debut to 2023 and places the Season 2 launch in February 2026.

Who runs the series now?

Chris Black and Matt Faction originally created “Monarch.” The report lists Black as the Season 2 showrunner and executive producer, and it identifies a wider group of executive producers (senior producers with oversight roles) working on either the overall show or specifically on Season 2:

  • Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell, of Safehouse Pictures, are also executive producers on the show.
  • Jen Roskind, Matt Shakman, Lawrence Trilling and Andrew Colville executive produce Season 2.
  • Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive produce on behalf of Toho Co., Ltd., the owner of the Godzilla character.

What is the status of the spinoff?

A spinoff (a series set apart from its parent show) starring Wyatt Russell as Col. Lee Shaw remains in development, according to the report.

Joby Harold will serve as showrunner. According to the report, the spinoff would follow Shaw on a mission in 1984 as he tries to prevent the Soviets from unleashing a devastating new Titan, while Harold develops multiple additional projects within the wider world of Legendary’s Monsterverse.

The report also names Millie Brady, Pilou Asbaek, Corey Stoll, Ralph Ineson, Nyasha Hatendi, Connie Nielsen and Stana Katic in the spinoff cast.

The next formal announcement will determine whether the reported Season 3 reset proceeds and whether the 1984 mission remains separate from the parent series. Until then, the spinoff has a showrunner and cast; the third season still needs to appoint one.
