Assayas and Kristen Stewart Reunite for Spiritual World

Olivier Assayas and Kristen Stewart will reunite for Spiritual World, their first major collaboration since 2016's Personal Shopper.

Stewart will play "Ada, a haunted young woman with clairvoyant powers who is visited by mysterious premonitions," as reported by Ion Cinema. The role marks the fullest pairing of director and star since Personal Shopper, the 2016 ghost story that Assayas himself has called the closest thing in his filmography to a modern classic. Stewart's later appearance in Assayas's Irma Vep amounted to a cameo.

The announcement earlier this year that Assayas's next project would be "in the vein" of Personal Shopper pointed directly to the long-rumored reunion.

The cast reads like a roll call of international acting talent. Riley Keough, Vicky Krieps, Niels Schneider — fresh off The Unknown — Wagner Moura, and longtime Fassbinder collaborator Barbara Sukowa all join Stewart in the feature.

Curiosa Films and ARTE France produce. Shooting runs from February to April, split between France and Germany.

No further details of the plot or production have surfaced. Based on the timeline, a premiere in late 2027 is the earliest realistic window, with a Cannes 2028 launch a reasonable guess — an arrival that, whenever and wherever it lands, will rank among the most anticipated of its season.
