Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu has cancelled its Oct. 3 performance of "Aida," citing a weather alert issued by Catalonia's civil protection agency, CECAT.

The performance was scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Saturday. The restrictions tied to the alert come into effect at 8:00 p.m., and the production was expected to run past that hour.

The company announced the decision in a statement: "In light of the alert issued by CECAT and following the authorities' directives, we wish to inform you that the performance of 'Aida' scheduled for today, Saturday, at 6:00 p.m. at the Gran Teatre del Liceu is cancelled, as it is expected to conclude after 8:00 p.m.—the time when the established restrictions come into effect."

Which performances are affected?

Two performances fall under the cancellation:

  • "Aida" on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 6:00 p.m.
  • "Jove Aida" on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 11:00 a.m.

The Liceu said it will contact all ticket holders for both performances to inform them of their options.

What goes ahead as planned?

The Sunday performance of "Aida" at 5:00 p.m. will proceed. The company stated it "is not affected by the adopted measures under the issued resolution."

The theatre added: "We regret any inconvenience this situation may cause and appreciate the audience's understanding and cooperation."

Who was scheduled to perform?

The cancelled Oct. 3 cast was set to feature Fiorenza Cedolins, Olga Maslova, Arsen Soghomonyan, Àngel Òdena, and Simón Orfila. Josep Gil conducts the production, staged by visual artist Shirin Neshat.

Sunday's 5:00 p.m. performance now becomes the earliest chance for audiences to see the Neshat staging this weekend, weather permitting.
