Benjamin Moore has named Webster Green, a mid-tone green with blue-gray undertones from its Historical Collection, as its 2027 Color of the Year. The choice is a deliberate vote for durability over the micro-trend cycle — the design equivalent, the brand suggests, of putting the phone down and touching grass.

Andrea Magno, vice president of brand, color, and integrated marketing at Benjamin Moore, frames the pick as a balance of old and new. "Webster Green reflects both where design is heading and Benjamin Moore's longstanding perspective on color," Magno said. "The shade truly balances tradition with personality." It carries a "timelessness," she notes, without giving up "the feeling of being current."

What does the color actually say about consumers?

The selection rests on findings from what the company describes as an intensive research process. The core takeaway: consumers want to move past quick trends toward lasting style. Benjamin Moore's customers are using the past as a reference point when planning interiors, and they're treating their homes as a protective, enduring cocoon rather than a canvas for whatever is trending this month.

That's a real shift in how paint gets chosen. Paint is technically easy to change, which makes it a tempting place to chase the moment — but the brand's research says buyers increasingly see that as a gamble.

Magno ties the shade directly to that mood. "More than ever, the fast pace quality of the world drives consumers' need for stability and composure," she said. "Webster Green has a distinctive pedigree, but still feels right for today's homes, which also describes the Color Trends palette: relevant for today while grounded in timeless design."

What comes with it: the Color Trends 2027 palette

Webster Green anchors a seven-shade companion lineup, the Color Trends 2027 Palette, built around calm and familiarity:

  • Shakespeare Tan
  • Antique Copper
  • Wild Aster (a lilac)
  • Durango (an olive)
  • Townsend Harbour Brown
  • White Down
  • Nelson Blue

All seven, the brand says, share the same comfort of familiarity that drove the winner.

How designers would use it

Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe of Nickey Kehoe, the AD100 design firm, back the pick. "Webster Green is a quiet, yet still dramatic green," Nickey said. "There is a quality to it that feels reliable."

Kehoe offered a concrete application if the pair were designing with the palette: darker shades such as Durango or Webster Green on the walls, paired with a lighter ceiling — Nelson Blue, she suggests, might work best. "We can also see Shakespeare Tan working well for the casings and the ceiling, with Webster Green on the walls," she said. The palette's richness, in her view, suits spaces meant to envelop the people who enter them.

The signal here is bigger than one shade. When the largest American paint brands start naming colors pulled from historical archives rather than chasing novelty, it marks where the residential market is heading: toward interiors built to last.
