Black Bear has taken domestic rights to "Honeymoon / Funeral," a romantic comedy starring Rebecca Ferguson, Greta Lee and Carrie Coon, in a deal shopped out of the newly created film market at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Nahnatchka Khan, the filmmaker behind "Totally Killer," directs from a screenplay by Julia Bicknell. The film wrapped shooting in London in September 2026 and is currently in post-production.

According to the official logline, "Honeymoon / Funeral" follows "two women (Ferguson and Lee) who meet on a flight from L.A. to London — one en route to her honeymoon by herself after being left at the altar by her girlfriend, the other headed home for her mother's funeral — and wind up spending the week together."

What did Black Bear say about the deal?

Katie Anderson, Black Bear's EVP of Acquisitions, signaled the distributor's confidence in the project's cast and creative team. "'Honeymoon / Funeral' is an original and hilarious story that is deeply human, anchored by the performances of Rebecca, Greta and Carrie, three of the best actresses working today," Anderson said. "We can't wait to partner with our friends at MRC and FilmNation to share this world that Nahnatchka and Julia have created with audiences."

The acquisition strengthens a slate built on prestige talent. Black Bear's upcoming projects include:

  • "Wicker," starring Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård and Peter Dinklage
  • Guy Ritchie's "Wife & Dog," with Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike and Anthony Hopkins
  • David Leitch's "Jason Statham Stole My Bike," starring Jason Statham and Hannah Waddingham
  • "A Woman in the Sun," with Renée Zellweger and Sissy Spacek
  • "Jonah," starring Greta Lee and Cooper Hoffman
  • "Atmosphere," directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and adapted from Taylor Jenkins Reid's bestseller

Who produced and financed the film?

Khan and Jennifer Carreras produce under the Fierce Baby banner. Bicknell also serves as a producer. MRC financed and oversaw production, while FilmNation Entertainment acted as worldwide sales agent.

MRC's recent releases include "The Love Hypothesis," "Wuthering Heights," "American Fiction," "Knives Out" and "Saltburn." Its upcoming films are "The Only Living Pickpocket in New York," "The Gallerist," "A Place in Hell," "The Best is Yet To Come" and "Eloise."

The Toronto deal marks one of the first high-profile acquisitions tied to the festival's new market structure. With "Honeymoon / Funeral" in post-production and a cast led by three in-demand actresses, Black Bear has positioned itself to bring Khan and Bicknell's comedy to audiences as the partnership with MRC and FilmNation moves toward release.
