Black Bear has acquired North American distribution rights to "Honeymoon/Funeral," a romantic comedy starring Greta Lee, Rebecca Ferguson and Carrie Coon. The film, financed and produced by MRC, wrapped production in London last month and is currently in post-production.

Nahnatchka Khan directs from a script by Julia Bicknell, a writer on "Yellowjackets." Khan previously directed "Always Be My Maybe" and is an Emmy nominee. Khan and Jennifer Carreras produce for Fierce Baby, with Bicknell also producing. MRC financed and oversaw production. FilmNation Entertainment is handling worldwide sales.

What is the film about?

The story follows two women, played by Ferguson and Lee, who meet on a flight from LA to London. One is traveling to her honeymoon alone after being left at the altar by her girlfriend; the other is heading home for her mother's funeral. The pair wind up spending the week together. Carrie Coon rounds out the lead trio.

How did the deal come together?

The sale closed quietly. "Honeymoon/Funeral" was one of the titles shopped at the new TIFF Market during what turned out to be a pretty quiet Toronto festival for deals — and even then, the pact took several weeks to negotiate.

Katie Anderson, Black Bear's EVP of Acquisitions, said in a statement: "'Honeymoon/Funeral' is an original and hilarious story that is deeply human, anchored by the performances of Rebecca, Greta, and Carrie, three of the best actresses working today. We can't wait to partner with our friends at MRC and FilmNation to share this world that Nahnatchka and Julia have created with audiences."

Where does the film sit in Black Bear's slate?

The acquisition adds to a busy pipeline for the distributor. Black Bear has "Wicker" — the festival darling starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård — arriving later this month, with a special release in 4DX format planned as well. The company also has "Jonah," a film starring Greta Lee alongside Cooper Hoffman, plus new projects from David Leitch, Guy Ritchie, Julia Cox, and the duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

For "Honeymoon/Funeral," the deal marks a reunion of sorts: the film gives Black Bear a second upcoming title with Greta Lee in a leading role.

What has MRC been doing?

MRC, the financier and producer behind the film, made "Wuthering Heights" and "The Love Hypothesis" earlier this year. The studio is also awaiting the release of "The Gallerist," which premiered at Sundance.

No release date for "Honeymoon/Funeral" has been announced. With post-production underway and a North American home secured, the film now moves one step closer to audiences — and to a marketplace that proved notably cautious at this year's TIFF.
