San Antonio's Centro de Artes turns ten this year, and it is marking the anniversary with "Mercado/Material," a free exhibition of 16 artists on view from October 16 through March 7, 2027.

Curator Mia Lopez built the show around the aesthetics of Latinidad and the nuances of cultural heritage, according to the gallery. The artists use vibrant imagery and popular culture to address Latinx cultural identity and consumerism, playfully building on the Pop art tradition of Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg.

The works on display run from layered screen prints of fruit cups and groceries to monumental piñata sculptures. They take in vibrant paintings, immersive installations, textile and ceramic sculptures, and works on paper.

The sources of that imagery are specific. The gallery lists markets in San Antonio, vendors in Chicago, storefronts in Mexico, and New York bodegas. Beneath the bright surfaces, the exhibition says, lie complex ideas around belonging, labor, and commerce.

Why the venue matters

The building carries its own market history. Centro de Artes began as a produce annex before becoming part of Historic Market Square in downtown San Antonio.

For ten years, the space has served as San Antonio's premier Latinx-focused gallery, presenting the stories, histories, and creative visions of communities in South Texas and beyond.

The City of San Antonio's Department of Arts & Culture runs the adaptive-reuse landmark as a free, year-round platform for contemporary art.

What does a decade add up to?

The numbers give the scale. Centro de Artes welcomes over 33,000 visitors annually. It has exhibited more than 3,100 artworks by 600 artists.

Admission is always free, and visitors can plan a visit through sa.gov.

With "Mercado/Material," the anniversary show ties that institutional record back to the site's commercial roots — a produce annex turned gallery now examining markets themselves as a subject of Latinx art.
