Charlie Cox will return to the London stage this winter to lead "The King's Ransom," a new play by Stuart Slade that world premieres at the Donmar Warehouse.

The "Daredevil" star plays Vince Black, a small-time crook in 1977 Memphis who receives the offer of a lifetime. The play's synopsis lays out the scheme in blunt terms: "The plan is simple: Kidnap Elvis Presley's corpse. Stash him in a chest freezer. Collect the million-dollar ransom." It continues: "Vince assembles a crack team of misfits and dropouts to attempt the heist of the century."

The premise draws on one of pop history's stranger episodes: the years after Presley's 1977 death, when conspiracy theories about the singer being alive circulated widely. Slade's play turns that cultural fixation into a caper set in the singer's hometown at the moment of his passing.

Matthew Dunster directs. His credits include "2:22: A Ghost Story" and "The Hunger Games on Stage," both of which have shaped his reputation for propulsive, high-concept popular theatre in London.

The ensemble around Cox mixes television names and stage regulars. Blake Harrison, known for "The Inbetweeners," plays Rusty. Tom Fletcher plays Charlie. Matthew Flynn takes the role of Mr. Bluefield, Leo Patrick plays Jessie Lee, and Jenny Rainsford plays Rhonda/Jenny. Christopher Short appears as Elvis. Cherrelle Skeete plays Mike, and Ronnie Yorke plays Red. The role of Martha will be shared by Ruby Barker, Eira Kay and Trixie Willis.

"The King's Ransom" opens Dec. 16, with previews from Dec. 5, and runs through Feb. 6, 2027.

The production marks a homecoming for Cox at the Donmar. He last appeared there in the 2010 production of "The Prince of Homburg." His other theatre credits include the West End revival of Harold Pinter's "Betrayal" in 2019, a production he transferred with to Broadway. Since then, Cox's screen profile has risen sharply through his role as Matt Murdock in the Marvel universe, making his return to a 250-seat London venue a notable shift in scale.

The creative team includes set designer Anna Fleischle, costume designer Jean Chan, lighting designer Sally Ferguson and sound designer Holly Khan. Chris Cox joins as illusion designer, while Ruth Cooper-Brown and Rachel Bown-Williams of Rc-Annie serve as fight and intimacy directors. Lotte Hines CDG casts the production.

The pairing of a Marvel lead with a director known for crowd-pleasing genre theatre positions "The King's Ransom" as one of the more commercial propositions in the Donmar's season — and a test of whether a heist play about a pop legend's stolen corpse can fill a winter house through February.
