Chris Brown received eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, and a £1,500 ($2,000 USD) fine, Billboard reported. The sentence followed his guilty plea to affray in July over the February 2023 attack on music producer Abe Diaw at a London nightclub.

Billboard’s account dates the attack to Feb. 19, 2023, when Brown and co-defendant Omololu “Hoody Baby” Akinlolu attacked Diaw at the venue. Brown allegedly used a tequila bottle as a weapon and repeatedly punched and stomped Diaw.

Billboard reported that Brown originally faced three charges: assault, suspicion of grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon, identified as the tequila bottle. He pleaded not guilty to all three in June and July 2025, and the court dismissed them afterward.

This July, Brown pleaded guilty to “affray,” which Billboard defined as fighting with an individual in a public space that incites terror. The change in charge is precise: Brown admitted a public-fighting offence after the original three charges were dismissed.

Taken together, Billboard’s chronology shows two separate legal paths. Brown’s criminal case reached a guilty plea to affray after the three original charges were dismissed. His exposure to Diaw’s damages claim ended earlier, through Diaw’s decision to withdraw the suit.

Billboard’s timeline records that Diaw sued Brown in October 2023 for $16 million, seeking damages for emotional and physical harm. Brown was arrested in May 2025 after landing in Manchester, England, for a concert. Diaw dropped the lawsuit in June 2025.

What does the sentence mean for Brown?

Billboard’s sentencing account makes the immediate change concrete: Brown receives an eight-month prison term, a 12-month suspension and a £1,500 ($2,000 USD) payment toward the prosecution. The report also described his prison sentence as waived. In practical terms, the sentence does not require immediate imprisonment; it records the eight-month term and keeps the 12-month suspension in place.

Brown’s lawyer, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins KC, called the incident “ugly and unattractive” and said her defendant expressed “a profound apology to all those present.” The wording made remorse the lawyer’s stated response to the nightclub assault.

According to Billboard, the court process unfolded during a North American tour with Usher on their joint R&B Tour. Brown canceled three shows during preparations for sentencing.

The stated reason, reported by Billboard, was to “prioritize the health and well-being of the touring party and crew.” The canceled dates coincided with Brown’s sentencing preparation, but the itinerary continues beyond that interruption.

Billboard reported that the tour resumes Nov. 5 at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. That date gives concert planners and audiences a clear point of reference after the interruption. Brown’s sentence pairs a suspended eight-month term with a £1,500 fine. For the tour, Nov. 5 is the next fixed point after three cancellations during Brown’s sentencing preparation.
