Tate McRae's "Housewife" debuted at Number Two on Billboard's Hot 100 with 22.9 million streams, 12.7 million in airplay audience and 4,000 units sold in its first full tracking week. The single came in behind Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas," which held the top slot, but ahead of four heavyweight competitors in the tightest chart race of the year so far.
The win matters because of who McRae beat. On Oct. 18, Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan released their "Expectations" remix, Taylor Swift dropped acoustic versions of "Patient Zero," and Zach Bryan and Lana Del Rey shared their collaboration "Lies." All five releases were predicted within a couple of points of each other for Number Two.
McRae pulled ahead midweek. Her track took the top spot on Spotify's Global chart, which surged its points total enough to lock in the runner-up debut.
What does this change for McRae?
"Housewife" is the Canadian singer's first release of 2026 and her highest-charting song as a lead artist on the Hot 100. That's a career milestone, not just a weekly stat. She entered a race against three of pop's biggest names and finished first among them.
The rest of the Top Five broke down as follows:
- No. 3: Rodrigo and Roan's "Expectations" remix — 18.2 million streams, 2.6 million in radio reach, 4,000 downloads sold and 15,000 in first-week physical sales.
- No. 4: Bryan and Del Rey's "Lies" — 19.6 million streams and 5,000 sold.
- No. 5: Swift's acoustic "Patient Zero" — 26,000 in physical sales and 4,000 in downloads.
The remix also carried commercial weight beyond the singles chart. It helped Rodrigo's latest album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So In Love, top the Billboard 200 for a third nonconsecutive week.
Why the chart itself is the bigger story
There's a second headline hiding in the numbers. For the first time since March 23, 2025, multiple songs by different artists debuted in the Top Five in the same week. That's a long drought, and it says something about how consolidated the Hot 100's upper reaches had become.
Call it stan-fueled variance, but five major artists releasing on the same day forced the chart to spread out. Online pop fans had tracked the predictions closely, watching McRae, Swift, Rodrigo with Roan, and Bryan with Del Rey cluster within a couple of points of one another.
Swift's presence in the race came via acoustic versions of "Patient Zero," the single that debuted at Number One earlier this month. Even her reissue-level release couldn't hold off McRae's surge, though its 26,000 in physical sales actually led all five contenders in that format.
Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas" stayed untouchable at the top, making the real contest a fight for second place — one McRae won on streaming momentum. Whether "Housewife" can climb that final step, or whether this crowded release week becomes a one-off burst of chart variety, will show in next week's numbers.
