The Criterion Collection has announced six titles for January 2027, and the list runs from Claire Denis's feature debut to a 4K restoration of John Boorman's Deliverance with "Dueling Banjos" in restored sound.

The lineup: two Blu-ray debuts, two 4K upgrades, one 4K new release, and one box set. Here is the full slate:

  • Claire Denis, Chocolat — Blu-ray. The filmmaker's first feature, a film whose colors and textures, as The Film Stage notes, demand the higher format.
  • Mike Leigh, Career Girls — Blu-ray. The film, per The Film Stage, "will resonate differently after the vision of female friendship in his great, potentially final film Tender Loving Care."
  • John Boorman, Deliverance — 4K, new to the format.
  • Bong Joon-ho, Parasite — 4K upgrade from its 2021 disc.
  • Midnight Cowboy — 4K, its first full-resolution release since its 2018 debut.
  • Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project, Volume 6 — Blu-ray box set.

The announcement landed in October 2026. The Film Stage framed it plainly: "It's not even Halloween but already time to set your 2027 viewing calendar."

Why does Volume 6 lead the month?

The Film Stage calls the World Cinema Project set "the most essential release to start 2027." It is the sixth edition of what the site deems "arguably Criterion's finest ongoing project."

The set restores four films once, in the site's words, "on the edge of extinction":

  • Flora Gomes's Morta Nega (Guinea-Bissau)
  • Luis Sérgio Person's São Paulo, Incorporated (Brazil)
  • Timité Bassori's The Woman with the Knife (Côte d'Ivoire)
  • Bahram Beyzai's The Stranger and the Fog (Iran)

Four films, four countries, three continents — one box. The site's verdict on the restorations borrows Richard Linklater's phrasing: these films now have, as the director would say, a "forever home."

What do the upgrades change?

Parasite last appeared on Criterion in 2021. The new edition moves Bong Joon-ho's film to 4K for the first time on the label.

Midnight Cowboy follows a longer gap. Its previous Criterion edition dates to 2018. The January 2027 release brings the film to 4K resolution.

Deliverance is the newest title to the high-definition tier. Criterion pairs it with restored sound for its most famous musical sequence, "Dueling Banjos."

The takeaway

Six titles in one month, with a preservation project at its center, signal where Criterion is placing its weight in 2027: canonical Hollywood in 4K, auteur debuts on Blu-ray, and global restorations that otherwise might not survive.
