“Obsession” director Curry Barker has already pitched a collaboration to Nathan Fielder after watching Fielder’s film “You Can See Everything.” Barker revealed the outreach Thursday night at the Time100 Next Gala at Pier59 Studios.

“I thought it was freakin’ insane and awesome,” Barker told Variety. “I didn’t know much about [Elizabeth Holmes’] story going into it. I feel like I missed certain tiny things, but it was three hours long and I wished it was longer. That’s rare, you know?”

Asked about a potential collaboration with Fielder, Barker said the idea is already in play: “I told him that. I said, ‘Hey!’ … I just put it out in the water.”

What makes the two films kindred?

“You Can See Everything” blurs the line between narrative and documentary storytelling. Variety’s chief awards editor Clayton Davis says the film has “turned the movie landscape topsy-turvy.” Like Barker’s “Obsession,” it has pushed the industry to re-examine what kinds of films resonate with Gen Z audiences — and what actually drives them to theaters.

“It felt new, fresh, different,” Barker said of “You Can See Everything.” “You almost can’t even call it a documentary, but it totally is. I’m just a huge fan of what [Fielder] is doing.”

How did Barker handle the awards circuit?

Barker should have more chances to cross paths with Fielder. Both films continue to earn recognition alongside some of the year’s most acclaimed titles.

“The events are really cool,” Barker said. “I did the Academy Gala and I was just blown away. I mean, every direction you look is someone that you’ve seen your entire life on social media, and you’re like, ‘Holy cow, this person’s here. This person’s here.’ That was a crazy experience.”

One encounter left him starstruck: Emma Watson.

“I was a huge ‘Harry Potter’ fan growing up, and I saw Emma Watson and I froze,” Barker recalled. “It’s so weird, I’m meeting all of these people that I really look up to, but there’s something different about when it’s someone from your childhood that really means a lot. That changes where you’re like, ‘Oh, woah.’ I was totally weird to her. I was trying to play it cool. But I did not play it cool.”

Who else was honored at Time100 Next?

The gala honored Barker alongside:

  • Raye
  • Druski
  • Paapa Essiedu
  • Several other Hollywood rising stars

Raye opened the night with an intimate performance, delivering jazzy renditions of “Cry Me a River” and “Happier Times Ahead.” Himesh Patel, Alex Warren and several other nominees gave toasts. “Saturday Night Live” cast member Ashley Padilla drew the biggest crowd reaction.

“It’s hard to give a toast when you believe you should not be here,” Padilla quipped. “I was going to say something like the children when they asked me who or what gives me hope for the future. But I realized I don’t know any. I know my niece and nephew. and one of them called me a bitch last week. I’m not gonna say which… my niece! My nephew’s an angel. But I’m not gonna hang all my hope on those guys!”

What comes next for Barker?

Barker’s next film, “Anything But Ghosts,” is set for release on May 7, 2027. Seth Rogen, who wrote Barker’s Time100 Next profile, has already seen it — and claims the sophomore feature is “even better” than “Obsession.”

“I’ve seen Curry’s next film, ‘Anything But Ghosts’ — and for those of you who, like me, are uncomfortable with this amount of talent in a person so young, I have bad news … it’s even better,” Rogen wrote. “And, to add insult to injury, he’s just as good an actor as he is a director.”

With a Fielder collaboration floated and a 2027 release already drawing that kind of praise, Barker enters the awards season with two films in play and a third on deck.
