Disney confirmed on Tuesday that Hulu and Disney+ have greenlit a reboot of "Glee," and Variety has learned from multiple sources that Lea Michele will reprise her role as Rachel Berry. That is the entire confirmed fact base. Everything else, as the show itself taught us, is a group number waiting to spiral.

The original ran six seasons on Fox, from 2009 to 2015, under Ryan Murphy. It blended satire and earnestness in ways that still baffle television historians. The reboot has no announced storylines or cast beyond Michele. So Variety's writers assembled the burning questions, and they are better than most press releases.

What Is the Reboot Actually About?

Variety floats two scenarios. The show ended 11 years ago, so a 10-year McKinley High reunion could bring back the original cast and pit them against changed teenage norms and a new glee club. Alternatively, Mr. Schue — principal when the series wrapped, with Sam running New Directions — could retire, handing Sam the principal's office and sparking a Rachel-Kurt-Mercedes succession battle after their music careers sputter.

The wilder option: return to a Season 1 thread. Beth, the daughter Quinn and Puck gave up for adoption, raised by Shelby (Idina Menzel), Rachel's biological mother and coach of McKinley's rival club, would now be about 16. High stakes, tangled family tree, ready-made protagonist.

Who Is Coming Back?

Michele's return is locked per Variety's sources, and her career revival via rave reviews in "Funny Girl" — after bullying allegations — mirrors Rachel Berry's own playbook a little too neatly. Heather Morris and Chord Overstreet have posted social-media hints. Jonathan Groff, Michele's real-life best friend, is guessed for a Jesse St. James cameo; Darren Criss still performs Blaine's material live. Chris Colfer said two weeks ago he'd "heard nothing" — then reunited with Criss over the weekend in London to sing the "Glee" version of "Baby It's Cold Outside." Variety finds that suspicious. So do I.

Harry Shum Jr., currently on Disney's own "Dancing With the Stars," looks likely. Kevin McHale once hesitated, saying he "shouldn't be playing a character in a wheelchair," but told People: "I could never say no to that." Dianna Agron, Amber Riley and Jenna Ushkowitz remain question marks; Ushkowitz still attends "Glee" conventions, which helps her odds.

How MAGA Is Sue Sylvester?

Jane Lynch told the Guardian in 2022 that Sue "would be MAGA" if the show returned, and that "there would have been people out there who would have wanted to cancel Sue Sylvester" today. The character ended the series as Republican Vice President with presidential ambitions. Variety speculates she lost the 2024 primary to Trump and now serves as his chief of staff. If Lynch returns to her Emmy-winning role, expect MAGA Sue versus 2026 "woke" culture as a defining subplot.

What Songs, and How Will Streaming Change It?

Olivia Rodrigo — who referenced the show in her 2021 single "Deja Vu" — tops the wish list, alongside Sabrina Carpenter, a "Hamilton"-themed episode (Disney already hosts the filmed version), Beyoncé for Mercedes, and Chappell Roan's "Pink Pony Club" as a Kurt solo that Rachel would inevitably try to steal, "Defying Gravity"-style.

Streaming also removes Fox's broadcast limits: cursing, graphic content, darker adult themes for a cast now in its 30s. Variety notes Mr. Schue's "Thong Song" was already horrifying under FCC rules. Fair.

How Will the Show Handle Its Dead?

Cory Monteith (died 2013), Mark Salling (2018) and Naya Rivera (2020) are the hard part. Monteith received the Season 5 tribute "The Quarterback." Rivera's Santana will be mourned, perhaps by Morris's Brittany or an Amber Riley dedication. Salling, who pleaded guilty to child pornography possession in 2017 and died by suicide a year later, is the problem Puck poses: a brief throwaway line via his half-brother Jake would be sensible, Variety concedes — before noting "Glee" has never once been sensible.

That contradiction is the pitch. A reboot with no plot, one confirmed star, and one genuinely unanswerable question about its own legacy. Production details, cast and release date remain unannounced.
