Programme

  1. "Elsinore" received 12 BIFA nominations, the most of any 2026 film.
  2. "I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning" earned 8 nominations; "Animol" took 7.
  3. Winners announced in two parts: Nov. 24 on social channels and Dec. 6 at London's Roundhouse.
  4. Mike Leigh's final film "Tender Loving Care" is nominated for best British independent film and director.

Andrew Scott's "Elsinore" leads the 2026 British Independent Film Awards with 12 nominations, cementing his ascent into the Oscars best actor race. The Studiocanal biographical drama, which opened the BFI London Film Festival, will compete for best British independent film, director for Simon Stone, lead performance for Scott and supporting actor for Billie Piper.

The film stars Scott as Ian Charleson, the "Chariots of Fire" actor offered the career-peak role of Hamlet at London's National Theatre just as he was succumbing to complications from AIDS.

Jay Lycurgo and Posy Sterling, both previous BIFA winners, announced the nominations on Tuesday.

Who else is in the running?

Clio Barnard's "I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning" follows with eight nominations, including best film, director, screenplay and ensemble performance. Ashley Walters' feature directorial debut "Animol" earned seven, with its newcomer Tut Nyuot cited for lead performance. The Welsh-language feature "Effi O Blaenau" and "Queen at Sea" took six each, both including best British independent film.

First-time filmmakers fared well. "Extra Geography," "Straight Circle" and "Florid" received five nominations apiece, while "Tender Loving Care" — the final film from indie cinema icon Mike Leigh — landed three, including best British independent film and director.

How eclectic is the lead performance race?

The gender neutral lead performance category (a single field regardless of gender) is one of the most varied in years. Scott's fellow nominees:

  • Juliette Binoche — "Queen at Sea"
  • Erin Doherty, an Emmy winner in her first lead role — "Faith"
  • Jonathan Jules, also a first lead — "Florid"
  • Tut Nyuot — "Animol"
  • Leisa Gwenllian — "Effi O Blaenau"

The supporting performance field pairs veterans Tom Courtenay and Anna Calder-Marshall ("Queen at Sea") with Claire Foy ("Ink"), Bill Pullman ("Everybody Digs Bill Evans"), Sekou Diaby ("Animol") and Piper.

Mike Leigh and Simon Stone will contend for best director alongside Barnard, Andrew Haigh ("A Long Winter") and Mark Jenkin ("Rose of Nevada"). Screenplay nominees are Stephen Beresford ("Elsinore"), Lance Hammer ("Queen at Sea"), Leigh, Gary Owen ("Effi O Blaenau") and Enda Walsh ("I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning").

What about the debut and craft races?

The Douglas Hickox Award for best debut director pits Walters against Billy Lumby ("Florid"), Molly Manners ("Extra Geography"), Bertil Nilsson ("Masc") and Louis Paxton ("The Incomer"). Ashley Walters, better known as an actor, now arrives as a directing contender on his first attempt.

Best international independent film includes Ryusuke Hamaguchi's "All of a Sudden" and Lee Chang-dong's "Possible Love." The Raindance Maverick Award honours five titles including "Masc" and "Something Familiar." Cinema of the Year recognises five independent venues, among them the Ultimate Picture Palace and the Kinema in the Woods.

Craft categories spread the wealth. "Elsinore" appears in cinematography (Mike Eley), editing (Valerio Bonelli), costume (Mel Page), production design (Helen Scott), original music (Stefan Gregory) and make-up and hair (Nadia Stacey, who is also nominated for "Madfabulous"). Connie Farr doubles up in music supervision for both "I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning" and "Queen at Sea."

Barnard's film dominates the ensemble category, with its cast — Anthony Boyle, Joe Cole, Jay Lycurgo, Daryl McCormack and Lola Petticrew — facing the large "Sunny Dancer" company (Bella Ramsey through Neil Patrick Harris and James Blunt) and Leigh's "Tender Loving Care" troupe.

When are the winners announced?

The Craft winners will be unveiled on Nov. 24 on BIFA's social channels. The remaining categories follow at the BIFA ceremony on Dec. 6 at London's Roundhouse — a two-part rollout that gives "Elsinore" two separate evenings to convert its dozen nominations into hardware.
