The Gotham Film & Media Institute will honor Focus Features' "Elsinore" with a Gotham Legacy Tribute at the Gotham Film Awards on Nov. 30 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York, recognizing a film built around the life of actor Ian Charleson, who died in 1990.
The tribute will honor the film's star Andrew Scott, screenwriter Stephen Beresford and director Simon Stone for bringing Charleson's legacy to new audiences. Charleson starred in the Oscar-winning "Chariots of Fire."
"In his final months, Ian Charleson affirmed his talent, his determination, and what it means to be an actor," said Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute. "With Elsinore, Andrew Scott, Stephen Beresford, Simon Stone, and the entire production team have made a deeply moving film about a life devoted to performance and the community that supported him. We are delighted to celebrate Elsinore with the Gotham Legacy Tribute in recognition of the remarkable artist who inspired it."
What is 'Elsinore' about?
The film tells the story of the Scottish actor who received a devastating AIDS diagnosis at the same time as he had the chance to take on the stage role of a lifetime in "Hamlet."
"'Elsinore' follows an actor at the height of his powers as he strives to command the stage, facing his own mortality with unflinching honesty, wit, and grace," the synopsis reads. "His final performance becomes his greatest triumph, and a source of healing and inspiration for those around him."
The cast, alongside Scott, includes:
- Olivia Colman, who plays Dr. Margaret Johnson, a physician who treated Charleson and fellow gay men during the HIV epidemic and launched the first dedicated HIV clinic
- Billie Piper
- Johnny Flynn
- Joe Locke
What does the tribute change for the film?
"Elsinore" arrives with festival credentials already in place. It premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and screened in the Special Presentations section at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it received the International People's Choice Award. A Gotham tribute ten days after its Nov. 20 limited release keeps the film in the awards conversation through its Thanksgiving expansion and December run.
The institute has not said whether the honor carries competitive weight at the ceremony itself; tributes at the Gothams function as career or legacy recognitions rather than juried awards. Still, the timing — mid-release, ahead of nominations — gives Focus Features a platform at Cipriani Wall Street in front of the industry voters the campaign needs.
Studiocanal, LD Entertainment, Lucky Red and Magnolia Mae Films produced the film.
Other honors at the ceremony
The Gothams will hand out several additional tributes on Nov. 30:
- "Michael" receives the musical tribute
- "La Bola Negra" receives the Vanguard Tribute
- Danny Boyle receives the director tribute for "Ink"
- Laika receives the anniversary tribute
Nominees for the 36th annual Gotham Film Awards will be announced on Oct. 27, a date that will show whether "Elsinore" also competes in the juried categories or stands on the tribute alone.
