Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, the Black Crowes and Margo Price will headline "A Song for Gram," a Gram Parsons tribute concert at the Troubadour in Los Angeles on Nov. 11. The date sits three days before the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame finally inducts Parsons, more than five decades after his death. The Hall of Fame is presenting the event. Tickets go on sale Thursday, Oct. 22.

The show's title plays off Parsons' 1973 track "A Song for You." The lineup runs deeper than its headliners: The Head and the Heart, Grahame Lesh, Harper Simon, Grace Potter, Jesse Welles, Jim Lauderdale and Madison Cunningham will all perform. Beachwood Sparks will supply what the organizers call "cosmic accompaniment."

Why now? Numbers that stack up neatly

The timing carries an odd arithmetic. Parsons would have turned 80 on Nov. 5. His daughter, Polly Parsons, sees the symmetry clearly. "It's really mind-blowing and special," she told Rolling Stone about her father joining the class of 2026. "2026. He was 26 when he passed. And it's his 80th birthday [this year]. There's so many little nuances that indicate such a perfect moment for this, and I'm really, really grateful."

She made a bolder claim too, one that tribute concerts usually fudge. "Now, let's talk about the fact that his music never gets old," she said. "Let's talk about the fact that there's a handful of albums that you put on and the production value is literally perfect. The sound and the way it makes you feel is identical, and it just doesn't get old. I love Gram's music for that reason. It's always fresh."

Verdict: devoted, and defensible. Few catalogs from 1973 still sound that clean.

What does the concert support?

Proceeds from "A Song for Gram" will benefit two Los Angeles organizations, the Friendly House Foundation and Backline, which address addiction and mental health needs in the music community. The cause fits the man. Parsons died in 1973 at 26, and his short career left the architecture of country rock standing — the genre he helped build with the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers and his solo records with Harris.

Who else is going into the Hall this year?

The induction ceremony takes place Nov. 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Parsons receives the Early Influence Award alongside Queen Latifah, Celia Cruz, Fela Kuti and MC Lyte — company that makes the "country rock pioneer" label feel small.

The Performer category inductees include:

  • Phil Collins
  • Billy Idol
  • Iron Maiden
  • Joy Division/New Order
  • Oasis
  • Sade
  • Luther Vandross
  • Wu-Tang Clan

"Induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is music's highest honor," said John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. "We look forward to celebrating these remarkable artists at this year's ceremony — it's going to be an unforgettable night."

Fifty-two years after his death, Parsons gets both a Hall of Fame trophy and a Troubadour stage full of admirers. Few artists have waited longer for either.
