ESPN Drafts Marvel's Vision to Launch ElClásico on ABC
ElClásico reaches U.S. broadcast TV for the first time on Sunday, October 2, on ABC, with ESPN and Marvel staging a Vision-led promo campaign voiced by Paul Bettany.

Programme
- ElClásico airs on U.S. broadcast television for the first time, on ABC, Sunday, October 2, at 4 p.m. Eastern.
- ESPN and Marvel Studios created a 30-second promo voiced by Paul Bettany, who plays Vision.
- The match is also available on ESPN+, ESPN Deportes and the ESPN App.
- Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Júnior are expected to play.
ElClásico makes its U.S. broadcast television debut on ABC this Sunday, October 2, at 4 p.m. Eastern, and ESPN has drafted a Marvel superhero to help launch it.
The Walt Disney unit has partnered with Marvel Studios to place the Vision — the android Avenger played on screen by Paul Bettany — at the center of the promotional campaign for the Barcelona–Real Madrid match. The collaboration includes a 30-second promo voiced by Bettany himself, timed to the character's new streaming series on Disney+ and to Sunday's fierce soccer showdown between the two Spanish giants.
The cross-promotion is deliberate. Vision carries a double mission this weekend: raising awareness for his own Disney+ series and adding what ESPN clearly hopes will be star-powered pizzazz to a telecast the network wants a mass audience to find. Disney owns both ESPN and Marvel, which makes the pairing possible without a licensing negotiation outside the corporate family.
What does the campaign actually include?
The ESPN–Marvel Studios collaboration spreads across several platforms and formats:
- A 30-second promo voiced by Paul Bettany, the actor who has long played Vision in Marvel films.
- A soccer-focused Q&A with Bettany, distributed across ESPN's FC social platforms.
- A "motion poster" dropped on ESPN FC's Instagram and TikTok Stories, plus ESPN Deportes' Instagram Story.
- A custom promo scheduled to air during Sunday's pre-game coverage on both ESPN's English-language and Spanish-language broadcasts.
- Sharing of that vignette by ESPN FC's X and Facebook accounts ahead of kickoff.
Other parts of the Disney empire joined the effort. "Live with Kelly and Mark" promoted the match during the week, as did several ESPN studio programs, including "SportsCenter." ESPN also enlisted creators Devin Caherly and Dylan Acanfora to produce content from Barcelona.
Who is playing, and where can viewers watch?
The match itself needs little manufactured drama. Soccer greats including Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Júnior are expected to take the field for the two clubs.
The ABC broadcast is not the only way in. The telecast will also be available on ESPN+, ESPN Deportes and the ESPN App, giving the network reach across linear, Spanish-language and streaming audiences simultaneously.
What does this change for sports broadcasting?
The move signals how Disney intends to use its corporate structure in the sports-rights era. Rather than promoting a marquee match through sports media alone, ESPN can borrow characters, actors and audiences from Marvel and from daytime television, converting a niche cable property into a broadcast-scale event. It is a template the company can repeat whenever a premium fixture needs a wider audience.
For soccer in the United States, an over-the-air ABC slot for ElClásico removes the pay-TV barrier from one of the sport's biggest fixtures, at a moment when the American audience for the game keeps growing.
