Jac Schaeffer, creator of "WandaVision," is developing a new "Stargate" TV series for Amazon MGM Studios, Variety has reported exclusively, citing sources with knowledge of the project.

A writers' room is expected to open in the near future, according to the same sources. Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will executive produce through their Safehouse Pictures banner alongside Schaeffer.

Representatives for Amazon and Schaeffer declined to comment.

Why does this deal matter for the franchise?

This marks Amazon's second attempt at reviving "Stargate" for television. Martin Gero previously developed a new series entry in the sci-fi franchise, but that project did not move forward, as previously reported.

Schaeffer arrives with a proven track record in genre television. "WandaVision," her series for Marvel Studios and Disney+, became the first Marvel Cinematic Universe series to premiere on the streaming platform. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprised their film roles as Wanda and Vision.

The show's reception was exceptional:

  • 23 Primetime Emmy Award nominations
  • Numerous additional accolades
  • Recognition as one of the most well-reviewed and highly praised TV shows of 2021

What is Schaeffer's background?

Schaeffer followed "WandaVision" with its spinoff, "Agatha All Along," starring Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness. She served as showrunner, writer and executive producer on that series, and also directed.

Her credits before Marvel include:

  • The screenplay for the Disney animated featurette "Olaf's Frozen Adventure"
  • The 2019 comedy "The Hustle," starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson, a remake of the 1980s feature "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"

She is repped by Curate, CAA, and attorney Erik Hyman.

Where does 'Stargate' come from?

The franchise originated as a 1994 film starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. The movie spawned "Stargate SG-1," which ran for 10 seasons with Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping and Christopher Judge among its cast.

The spinoff "Stargate Atlantis" then aired for five seasons between 2004 and 2008.

The project falls under Schaeffer's overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, announced earlier this year. With a writers' room set to open soon and a creative team that has already delivered two Marvel hits, the revival now has its strongest signal yet that the franchise will return to screens.
