Fiat unveiled a 4.45-metre concept car at the 2026 Paris Motor Show that converts from an SUV into a pickup at the slide of a rear section. The Multiplay, presented by Fiat CEO Arnaud Belloni in a video interview produced by Dezeen, combines the passenger space of a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) with the raised stance of an SUV and the open cargo bed of a pickup.

"We are reinventing here the concept of family car," Belloni said of the vehicle.

What can the Multiplay actually do?

The sliding rear section switches the enclosed passenger compartment into an open load bed for bicycles, sports equipment and other bulky items. The seats reposition for different passenger and cargo arrangements, and in family configuration the car carries six passengers plus a modular extra seat.

The rear spoiler rotates into a bicycle rack that holds two bikes. Inside, a unit Fiat calls the Petsenger seat can hold a pet, mount a child car seat or serve as a small table. The front passenger seat swivels rearward to form a reclining "Sunseat" that uses the dashboard as a backrest beneath the panoramic roof.

"Multiplay can slide from an MPV to an SUV to a pickup," Belloni said. "That, I would say, is a symbol of freedom."

The interior pairs red and pink textiles with bright green bodywork inspired by the colours of a watermelon. The textiles were made with a stitch-free, three-dimensional knitting process, and a digital display integrated into the dashboard disappears when the vehicle is switched off.

Where does the design come from?

Fiat traces the concept to the original Fiat 600 Multipla, launched in 1956, which seated six people in a body just 3.5 metres long. "Basically, that car invented the concept of multipurpose vehicle – the MPV," Belloni said.

The Multiplay appeared at Paris alongside Multiplina, a separate three-metre electric concept with four seats and two doors, as part of Fiat's broader study of urban and family transportation.

The company describes the Multiplay as a testing ground for future design solutions, not a preview of a specific production model. That caveat matters: none of the moving parts — the sliding bed, the rotating spoiler, the Petsenger seat — is confirmed for a showroom car.

"Fiat is obsessed with all types of mobility on each size of car. So whatever the size, we are able to invent new categories of vehicles," Belloni said.

What does this change for buyers? For now, nothing on the forecourt. The Multiplay signals which flexible-interior ideas Fiat, founded in Turin in 1899 and now part of Stellantis, intends to test across its range — and which features may surface in future city and family models.

The video was produced for Stellantis as partnership content.
