Florian Boesch Steps In for Ailing Groissböck at Wiener Staatsoper
The Wiener Staatsoper has announced that baritone Florian Boesch will replace Günther Groissböck, sidelined by tonsillitis, in a recital of Schubert's 'Winterreise.'
Programme
- Günther Groissböck withdrew from the Wiener Staatsoper recital due to a recently diagnosed case of tonsillitis.
- Florian Boesch will sing Franz Schubert's 'Winterreise' in his place, accompanied by Malcolm Martineau.
- Boesch performs 'Bluebeard's Castle' at the Wiener Staatsoper this season, opening Sept. 30 with Asmik Grigorian.
The Wiener Staatsoper has announced a last-minute cast change: baritone Florian Boesch will replace bass Günther Groissböck in the scheduled performance of Franz Schubert's "Winterreise."
The company attributed the change to illness. "Due to a recently diagnosed case of tonsillitis, Günther Groissböck will not be able to sing at the concert scheduled for tomorrow. Florian Boesch will perform in his place singing Franz Schubert's 'Winterreise,'" the Wiener Staatsoper said in its statement.
The recital goes ahead as planned, with Boesch taking over the full song cycle at short notice.
Who is Florian Boesch?
Boesch is an established baritone with appearances across major European venues to his name. His performance history includes the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, the Theater an der Wien, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and London's Wigmore Hall, among others.
His connection to the Wiener Staatsoper extends well beyond this substitution. This season he performs Béla Bartók's "Bluebeard's Castle" at the house alongside soprano Asmik Grigorian. That production opens on Sept. 30.
Who accompanies him?
Boesch will be accompanied at the piano by Malcolm Martineau, the company confirmed.
What does the change mean for audiences?
Ticket holders lose Groissböck's much-anticipated turn in the cycle, but gain a singer deeply familiar with the repertoire and with the house itself. "Winterreise" remains one of the most demanding works in the lieder canon, and late substitutions of this scale are a test of any performer's preparation.
Boesch's calendar suggests he arrives ready. With "Bluebeard's Castle" opening on Sept. 30 opposite Asmik Grigorian, the baritone's season at the Wiener Staatsoper now begins earlier than planned — and with Schubert rather than Bartók.
The Wiener Staatsoper has not indicated whether Groissböck will return for a future performance of the work, leaving the door open for a rescheduled appearance once he recovers from tonsillitis.
