Four of the world's major opera companies — the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera, Opera Australia and Teatro La Fenice — will join forces on Oct. 28, 2026, to mark the centenary of Dame Joan Sutherland, the Australian soprano whose career spanned the second half of the 20th century.
The one-night celebration, titled "La Stupenda: The Voice of the Century," takes place at Australia House in London. The Tait Memorial Trust presents it in conjunction with Opera Australia and the Metropolitan Opera. Maestro Richard Bonynge AC CBE — Sutherland's widower and longtime artistic collaborator — will attend as Guest of Honor.
What did the Met's leader say?
Peter Gelb, General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera, set the tone of the tributes in a statement. "Few artists have made as meaningful a contribution to the Metropolitan Opera as Dame Joan Sutherland, one of the most transcendent singers of the 20th century — if not the entire history of our art form," Gelb said.
He added: "I will never forget the power of her voice, the thrill of her stratospheric high notes, and the endless ovations she received."
Alex Beard, Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House, confirmed his company's participation, saying: "The Royal Opera is delighted to join in the celebrations for the centenary of Dame Joan Sutherland's birth."
Who performs, and what is on the program?
Natalie Murray Beale will conduct the Tait Sutherland Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble featuring alumni of Sinfonia Smith Square. The announced soloists are:
- Cassandra Wright
- Alasdair Kent
- Duncan Rock
- Emmanuel Fonoti-Fuimaono
- Bella Marslen
- Eden Shifroni
- Lyla Levy-Jordan
- Karl Huml
- Valda Wilson
Two guest sopranos, Ellie Neate and Soraya Mafi, will appear courtesy of Opera Rara.
The program draws on the repertoire most closely associated with Sutherland's career: works by Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi and Delibes, alongside operetta and songs by Noël Coward.
What does this change for audiences?
For London audiences, the event consolidates a rare alignment: four international houses endorsing a single memorial concert, rather than mounting separate tributes in their own venues. The announcement names the date, the venue, the conductor and the soloists — but not ticket prices, on-sale dates or whether the performance will be streamed or recorded. Anyone hoping to attend will need to watch the Tait Memorial Trust's channels for those details, which the announcement does not yet provide.
It also leaves one question open. The four companies are listed as participants, yet the announcement specifies roles only for the presenters and performers. Whether each house is contributing artists, funding or simply its name is not stated.
What is certain is the calendar: one evening, one venue, and a centenary date fixed for Oct. 28, 2026 — with Richard Bonynge, the conductor who shaped much of Sutherland's recorded legacy, presiding as Guest of Honor over the tribute to "La Stupenda."
