Freestyle Digital Media has acquired North American VOD rights to "The Ballad of Lieutenant Dan," a documentary about actor Gary Sinise's work with veterans, with release set for November 10, 2026. The company is the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen's Allen Media Group.

The film will be available on digital HD internet, DVD, cable and satellite platforms across North America on that date. Freestyle Digital Media negotiated the acquisition directly with the filmmakers.

What does the documentary cover?

"The Ballad of Lieutenant Dan" traces Sinise's decades-long mission to honor America's fighting men and women, support injured veterans and stand beside Gold Star families. The calling grew out of his work playing a Vietnam veteran in "Forrest Gump."

The film also follows Sinise through personal tragedy: his son, Mac, died of cancer at 33. Throughout, the documentary frames Sinise's efforts around his credo: "We can always do a little more."

Interview subjects include:

  • Gary Sinise
  • Jay Leno
  • Tim Allen
  • Joe Mantegna
  • Chip Foose
  • Mykelti Williamson

Steve Mitchell Beebe directed the film. Bud Brutsman produced it.

What has the director said?

Beebe described the film's scope in a statement. "'The Ballad of Lieutenant Dan' looks into the world of actor and humanitarian, Gary Sinise, and explores how his commitment to veterans and first responders created a community that supported him through a difficult period in his life," he said.

He added: "This is a story about selfless kindness and, I hope, will inspire all of us to do what we each can to uplift our friends, neighbors and communities."

Who is Gary Sinise?

Sinise is an Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning actor. His screen credits include "Ransom," "Apollo 13" and the TV series "CSI: NY." He won an Emmy for starring in "George Wallace."

The title of the documentary references his "Forrest Gump" role as Lieutenant Dan Taylor, a character whose arc — from wounded veteran to rebuilt life — has become closely associated with Sinise's off-screen advocacy. The November 10, 2026 release date arrives one day before Veterans Day, positioning the film squarely within the annual commemoration it documents.

The acquisition gives Freestyle Digital Media a title with a recognizable star, a built-in veterans' audience and a holiday-adjacent release slot, a combination distributors often prize for VOD performance.
