Grimes has released "Accelerando," the first single from Psy Opera, her first full-length album in six years. Claire Boucher dropped the track today, following a teaser trailer she posted Thursday.

The album has no release date yet and no complete track list. But her conversation with Interview this spring, where she first revealed the project, mentioned two titles: "The Light Ages" and "Eve Is Online." The latter appeared in the teaser trailer, in which Grimes retells the Gospel of John with AI embellishments. "On the first day, God created the large language model," she deadpans.

What is Psy Opera actually about?

According to a statement relayed via Pitchfork, Grimes frames the record as a chronicle of her years away from pop. "From the AI debate to immoral wars to a bad ex to looksmaxers [sic] to the importance of religion, Psy Opera will cover everything Grimes witnessed as a woman of history during her hiatus from pop music," she said.

That hiatus followed a period she describes as near-total withdrawal. "I totally quit music a couple of years ago," she told Interview in April. "Everything I'd been going through with the public and my personal life and having kids, I was like, 'I'm just going to be a stay-at-home mom. Screw this.'"

The personal life in question includes her relationship with Elon Musk. The two met in 2018, had three children, and split in 2022. Since then, she has publicly denounced Musk for bringing their son X Æ A-Xii to the White House and used Twitter to try to reach him over a "medical crisis" involving one of their children.

Where does the AI angle come from?

Boucher engaged with generative AI earlier than most pop artists. In 2023, as the AI boom began, she gave artists consent to use her voice in AI-generated music and offered to split the proceeds evenly. "On any successful AI generated song that uses my voice" she would share royalties 50/50, she wrote, adding: "I have no label and no legal bindings."

The new single extends that preoccupation. "Accelerando" was co-produced by Vadakin and Grimes, and it recalls material from her last album, Miss Anthropocene, released in 2020. The title may nod to Charles Stross's sci-fi short story collection of the same name, several stories of which deal with superintelligence and the technological singularity (the hypothesis that machine intelligence will one day exceed human control). That reading fits the album's theology-meets-machine trailer, though nothing is confirmed.

What does this change for her career?

Psy Opera positions Grimes as one of the first major pop artists to build a full album around AI as subject matter rather than mere tool. It also marks her return to long-form work after years of scattered collaborations: producing songs for Adéla, working with Sevdaliza, and featuring on tracks by her ex-boyfriend Anyma.

There's more in the pipeline. According to Interview, she has also worked on a documentary about machine consciousness titled First Contact. With a trailer, a single and no release date, Psy Opera now hinges on one unanswered question — when it arrives — and Grimes, so far, isn't saying.
