Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19. Rockstar Games confirmed the release date and, on Tuesday, the lineup of in-game radio stations.
Six stations. Thirteen hosts. A fictional Florida coastline. For a franchise that built its reputation on licensed music, this announcement reads like a curated playlist handed down from a music supervisor with an unlimited budget.
Who is on the dial?
Cocoteo FM is the modern Latin station, anchored by Bad Bunny and Puerto Rican singer RaiNao. AfroBank FM carries African music, hosted by Burna Boy and Palms Trax. Chamber 106.6 programs classic metal, fronted by Kerry King and Tom Araya of Slayer (the thrash-metal band). Flash FM runs the pop rotation with Swedish artist Robyn and model Alex Consani. Dirty South Classics leans on Trick Daddy and Trina. Back Country Radio, billed as "renegade country," gathers Morgan Wallen, Lana Del Rey, and Lana's husband Jeremy Dufrene. Previews of each station stream on Rockstar's site.
The geographic spread is intentional. Latin America, Africa, Scandinavia, the American South, the country charts — every base covered. Rockstar rarely leaves a region unrepresented in its GTA radio mix.
What did RaiNao say?
The Puerto Rican artist spoke to Pitchfork. "Cocoteo gets our vibe, our slang, our taste, our pride, our experiences, our traditions, and all our crazy antics," she said. She added: "I was never extreme about video games, but GTA was one of my favorites…. Diving around in a stolen car, blasting music with all that adrenaline pumping was THE VIBE. It's mind-blowing to know that I'll now be part of that experience."
The voice is hers. The placement is Rockstar's careful cultural cartography, mapping a global playlist onto fictional Florida.
What about the original music?
The radio is only half the story. In September, Rockstar revealed GTA VI's 34-song original soundtrack. Travis Scott, Yung Lean, and PinkPantheress all contributed new tracks. That is a sizable catalog of commissioned music for one title — larger, by song count, than most independent labels release in a year.
The combination suggests Rockstar treats audio as its own release calendar. The radio is curated music. The soundtrack is commissioned music. Both ship November 19.
What's the rollout?
Previews are streaming now. The full launch arrives November 19. Expect the complete tracklists to leak within a week. Expect Rockstar to license the radio cuts to streaming services shortly after. The radio has always been GTA's quiet weapon, and this is the broadest sonic brief the studio has ever commissioned, even if the verdict on whether it works will land only when players hit the highway.
