Swedish designer Gustaf Westman has designed a black leather Mickey Mouse sofa that will retail for €9,250 as part of a new collaboration with Disney. The collection launches at a Paris pop-up on 30 October, before travelling to Tokyo and New York.

Westman revealed the first three pieces: the sofa, a ceramic cup and saucer, and a reworked version of his Chunky Tumbler. All take an abstract approach to the character, reducing him to his ears, his face and his red shorts with white buttons. On the tumbler, those shorts have become the base.

The full collection, inspired by Disney's Mickey & Friends brand, will span apparel and accessories alongside furniture and homeware.

Why does the pairing work?

Westman built his name on rounded edges and cartoon-like inflated shapes, across everything from crockery to furniture. Mickey, frankly, was always going to fit. His pieces look like furniture that has been gently over-inflated — a balloon-animal aesthetic that meets a 97-year-old cartoon mouse without much friction.

"Collaborating with Disney felt like a very natural creative match from the start – when it came to sketching ideas and exploring how a silhouette or colour of a character could meet my own design language, there was so much overlap between these recognisable silhouettes and my signature work," Westman said.

"There's so much joy and playfulness associated with these characters, and I wanted to capture some of that feeling in every piece," he added.

Which piece leads the collection?

The Mickey Tumbler gets the character's full colour palette, while the ceramic cup and the leather sofa go all black and more sculptural. The sofa joins a made-to-order furniture line.

Westman's verdict on his own work is short. "The Mickey Tumbler is probably my favourite piece," he said. "You can look at it for one second and totally understand it."

"You see both my world and how I have taken inspiration from Mickey's world at the same time, and that simplicity is something I'm always trying to achieve," he continued.

Is this Disney's first designer flirtation?

Hardly. Disney, founded as an animation studio in 1923, has a long queue of designers who have borrowed the mouse. Interior designer Kelly Hoppen reimagined Mickey for what she called a "grown-up" audience. Ron Arad decorated chairs with Mickey's oversized ears for a 2021 exhibition.

Westman's version is the puffiest yet, and possibly the most literal about comfort: a sofa shaped like a character built for sitting on couches.

The Paris pop-up on 30 October will reveal how far the collaboration stretches beyond furniture — and whether Mickey's ears translate into apparel as convincingly as they do into homeware.
