Jack Antonoff and Margaret Qualley filed for divorce on Friday, three years after their August 2023 wedding. The filing, lodged as "Sarah Margaret Qualley v. Jack Michael Antonoff" with the Kings County Supreme Court in Brooklyn, describes the split as an "uncontested joint divorce."

The paperwork isn't fully finished. The court has processed a certificate of dissolution of marriage, but a settlement agreement is still pending and a judge still needs to review everything. The couple had no children.

What do the couple's camps actually say?

People cited an anonymous source who described the breakup as a "mutual decision" and confirmed the two filed jointly. "They share a deep affinity and love for one another, and though their romantic partnership is ending, they will absolutely be lifelong friends," the source told the magazine.

Reps for Antonoff, 42, and Qualley, 32, did not immediately return Rolling Stone's requests for comment.

The timeline matters here. The couple started dating in 2021, according to People. News of their separation broke this summer. At that point, in July, a rep for Qualley pushed back on tabloid coverage of the relationship. "There are no trust issues," the rep said. "There was no infidelity or anything outside of respect and partnership in this relationship."

So the public record now contains two framings: the rep's July denial of any conflict, and Friday's joint filing confirming the marriage is over. Both can be true at once — a clean, uncontested split is exactly what both statements describe.

How did the marriage surface in their work?

Antonoff, who fronts Bleachers and produces for pop's biggest names, recently addressed the awkward practical question of what to do with songs about Qualley. On Bleachers' recent album Everyone for Ten Minutes, he wrote material about the relationship — and then had to decide whether to keep playing it live.

"I obviously was really worried about this specific thing, I sat long and hard with it and thought: 'If I change the set list …' and in my gut there was a unanimous jury that said, 'No, this is the deal,'" he told The Guardian. "'The deal I've made with my audience is that I'm going to tell you honestly how I feel and I'm going to risk at any moment having to stand behind it for fucking forever.'"

Qualley's creative fingerprints are on that catalogue too. In 2024, she told Rolling Stone that she saw "Tiny Moves" — the Bleachers video she choreographed, co-directed and starred in — as a "love letter" to Antonoff. "I like doing everything with Jack," she said at the time. "He's my favorite person to do anything with."

What happens next?

The filing sets the machinery in motion, but it doesn't close it. A judge still has to sign off on the pending settlement agreement before the divorce is final. Until then, the couple's own words — "lifelong friends," per their source — frame how they want the split understood.

For audiences, the practical consequence is already visible on stage: Antonoff has kept the Qualley songs in the Bleachers set list, and he's told you exactly why he won't be removing them.
