Netflix Renews ‘The Diplomat’ for Season 5 After a Cliffhanger

By Daniel Okafor

Netflix renewed The Diplomat for Season 5 on Thursday, shortly after Season 4 arrived on the streamer earlier in the month, though the announcement withheld any plot details. Netflix said further information would follow.

What does Season 5 hold back?

Netflix’s Season 4 description centers two married couples:

• Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).
• President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) and Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford), in a reunion connected to The West Wing.

Netflix’s official description said the marriages threatened “to eat each other alive.” Netflix’s summary says Season 4 ended on a massive cliffhanger involving Grace and Hal’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon.

Netflix’s description continued: “One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the U.S. and U.K., as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save.” The conspiracy pushed the United States toward war as Kate fought to stem the damage. The description said Kate and Todd, an uneasy pair, united to prevent their alliance from upsetting the balance of power at home and abroad.

That setup leaves three live threads for any follow-up information: the weapon, the Grace-Hal alliance and the strain on Kate’s marriage. The renewal does not resolve them; it simply keeps the story in play.

Netflix also identifies Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah as stars in the series.

How strong are the audience figures?

The series was an immediate hit when it debuted in 2023, according to Netflix. Its audience figures provide the scale:

• Season 1 pulled 173.46 million viewing hours in its first four weeks, according to Netflix.
• Season 2 spent four weeks in the Global Top 10 chart.
• Season 4 reached No. 3 on the Global Top 10 in its second week and entered the Top 10 in 63 countries.

Netflix’s figures also explain why the platform moved quickly. Season 1 established reach, Season 2 sustained chart visibility, and Season 4 returned to the global chart in its second week. The Season 5 order arrived before the new run could add a fresh chart cycle.

Netflix had already renewed Season 4 before Season 3 had even premiered, the streaming equivalent of reserving another table before the first dinner has ended. The paperwork was brisk.

What has the series earned?

The show and Russell have collected numerous nominations at both the Emmys and Golden Globes, according to Netflix.

For Season 3, Russell won the SAG Actor’s Award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series, while Janney won an Emmy Award for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series. The series received seven Emmy nominations in total, including for outstanding drama, according to Netflix.

Who is behind the series?

Netflix identifies Debora Cahn as the creator of The Diplomat and an executive producer alongside fellow producers Russell, Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah and Eli Attie. Netflix currently makes all released seasons available.

Netflix’s promised follow-up should now establish whether the weapon conspiracy, the Grace-Hal alliance and the strain on both marriages carry over into the next season. The renewal is firm; the plot remains officially blank.
