Rajinikanth's "Jailer 2," the highest-grossing Tamil-language film of all time with $86 million at the box office, begins streaming worldwide on Prime Video on Nov. 12. The streamer announced the date after what it called a record-breaking theatrical run in India and overseas.
Nelson Dilipkumar directs the action crime sequel, produced by Kalanithi Maran through his Sun Pictures banner. Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired prison officer at the center of the franchise, with Anirudh Ravichander supplying the score.
Who appears alongside Rajinikanth?
Four major stars from across Indian cinema take cameo roles: Malayalam veteran Mohanlal, Bollywood's Hrithik Roshan, Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi and Kannada cinema's Shivarajkumar. The wider ensemble cast includes SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Ramya Krishnan, Namo Narayana and Yogi Babu.
The film resumes the story where the original ended. A crime syndicate with political clout and overseas reach puts Muthuvel's family in danger, pulling him out of retirement. Former foes return to settle scores, new allegiances form, and Muthuvel acts alone to protect his family and restore order.
What does the director say?
Nelson said the first film's success shaped the sequel's ambition. "The response to 'Jailer' was extraordinary, and the love audiences have shown for Muthuvel Pandian has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey," he said. "With 'Jailer 2,' we wanted to build on that special connection while taking the story, action, scale, and emotional stakes to an entirely new level."
He also explained the appeal of the streaming deal. "Having Rajinikanth sir reprise his iconic role as Muthuvel Pandian, alongside such a formidable ensemble cast, with Anirudh's music adding its own distinctive energy, made this chapter particularly exciting for us," Nelson said. "Following the film's spectacular theatrical response, we're delighted to bring 'Jailer 2' to Prime Video, where it will join 'Jailer,' taking both chapters of Muthuvel Pandian's story to audiences in India and across the world."
What does this change for the streaming chart?
The release consolidates Rajinikanth's grip on Tamil cinema's box office record books. He now holds the top three positions on the all-time Tamil chart: "Jailer 2" at No. 1, followed by "2.0" and "Jailer." His film "Coolie" sits at No. 5.
The first "Jailer" already streams on Prime Video, so the sequel completes the franchise on one platform. From Nov. 12, "Jailer 2" streams in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada in India, and reaches viewers in more than 240 countries and territories. That footprint puts the biggest Tamil hit ever in front of a global audience the same week it lands on the service.
