Jason Sudeikis ended Season 4 of Apple TV's "Ted Lasso" by demoting himself from head coach of AFC Richmond's women's team to assistant manager, handing the job to Tanya Reynolds's Alice Chilton in the finale titled "The Departing Lass."

Brendan Hunt, the actor who plays Coach Beard and a writer-executive producer on the show, told Variety that the demotion was decided early.

"That was something Jason wanted to happen from the beginning of the writers' room," Hunt said. "He saw Ted stepping down as just kind of fundamental to what the season was going to be."

The finale's image bookended Episode 1, which opened on a close-up of a "Lasso assistant manager" nametag before the season began.

What else changed at Nelson Road?

  • Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) accepted the Chelsea manager's job, weeks before he and Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) welcome a child.
  • Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) proposed to her boyfriend Matthijs (Matteo van der Grijn).
  • Nate Shelley (Nick Mohammad) returned for a Diamond Dogs reunion, summoned by Roy for parenting counsel.
  • Pub owner Mae (Annette Badland) died in Episode 9; her will returned her AFC Richmond shares to Rebecca, preserving her 51% stake and foiling Tracey Ullman's Zelda.
  • Brandi Carlile recorded a new version of the opening theme.
  • Beard closed the season with a haircut, after months of color contact lenses and silver earrings.

Why did Ted step down?

The writers pulled two threads together: Ted's unresolved grief over his father, who died by suicide when Ted was 16, and his absenteeism with his son Henry.

"The Henry thing is the main thing," Hunt said. "He just wants to make sure he's with Henry more. And then, as a side channel to that, he's watched Alice grow. She was almost ready when we first met her, and now she's much more ready."

An Employee of the Year plaque, bequeathed to Ted by his record-setting father, recurred through the season as a marker of inherited pressure.

Will there be a Season 5?

Hunt declined to confirm a renewal. Asked about Sudeikis's intentions, he said:

"He plays the cards close to his chest, and I'm not privy to whatever poker game that I hope is happening between the powers that be."

The writer-producer added: "I think we've always basically hoped we were coming back for more than one, but if it ends up just being one, then OK, that's fine. It did end nicely."

Hunt listed Ted and Beard now working as peers, Roy and Keeley's parental arc, Rebecca's marriage, the Diamond Dogs running the pub, and the squad's response to Alice as open storylines, calling them "questions rather than cliffhangers."

What did Mae's death unlock?

The writers used Mae's passing as the season's emotional pivot, Hunt said. The phrase that guided the room was: "how can Mae save the team from the grave?"

Once Sudeikis told Badland the plan, the actor agreed. "Shout out to Annette Badland, who is just so beloved by all of us, and such a trooper," Hunt said.

What about Ted's broken chair?

A chair set too low haunted Ted all season. The gag resolved in the finale, with Alice revealed as the saboteur. Sudeikis planted the bit around Episode 3 or 4, Hunt said, and held the punchline for months.

"He doesn't necessarily need to tell you everything that's coming up," Hunt said. "We don't need to know everything. We'll find out eventually. But yeah, I was pretty tickled. As I hope everyone else will when they find out that was the reason."

With a Season 5 unconfirmed and at least five narrative threads left open, Apple TV's most decorated comedy heads into an off-season whose outcome now sits with the executives Hunt declined to name.
