Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Feb. 14, 2027. The rapper confirmed the booking himself, ending a week of speculation that began with a Puck News report.
"From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey," Jay-Z said in a statement. "Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world's biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true."
How the booking came together
Puck News reported last week that Jay-Z decided to take the gig himself after an extended period of determining who would follow Bad Bunny and Kendrick Lamar (the recent halftime headliners). That deliberation made sense given his position: since 2019, Jay-Z has been an essential figure in the show's decision-making through Roc Nation's ongoing co-production partnership with the NFL.
In other words, the man choosing the performers has now chosen himself.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell celebrated the announcement in a separate statement Monday. "For several years, we've had the privilege of working closely with Jay-Z and Roc Nation, and I've seen the extraordinary impact he has had on the Super Bowl Halftime Show," Goodell said. "When we first reached an agreement with Roc Nation to produce the show, I had just one request: that Jay-Z take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him."
Why now?
The timing tracks with the rapper's calendar. Jay-Z is coming off a massive year marking the 30th anniversary of his 1996 debut album, Reasonable Doubt, and the 25th anniversary of his landmark 2001 LP, The Blueprint.
The celebrations included pop-ups, activations, and an HBO docuseries recorded with producer Rick Rubin. More tellingly, Jay-Z spent more time on stage in recent months than he has in years.
The run tells its own story:
- Headlined the Roots Picnic in June
- Played three nights at Yankee Stadium, with guests including Eminem, Nas, Alicia Keys, his wife Beyoncé, and daughter Blue Ivy
- Toured overseas with stadium shows in London and Paris
- Wrapped the run this month with two shows at SoFi Stadium, featuring Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and Too Short
What does this change for the halftime show?
It closes a loop. SoFi Stadium, where Super Bowl LXI will be played, is the same venue where Jay-Z just finished his recent touring run. The halftime show counts among the few major stages he has yet to perform on, and he arrives with a tested live band, recent guest-collaboration muscle, and two anniversary-year sets of material to draw from.
The 2027 performance also caps an eight-year arc in which Jay-Z moved from booking the talent to being the talent — Goodell's "one request," made back in 2019, finally answered on the league's biggest night.
