  1. Jessica Lange called FX 'too f—ing cheap' to pay for cars home from the 'AHS' set at a PaleyFest panel.
  2. Lange returns in 'AHS: 13,' her first franchise appearance since 2018's 'AHS: Apocalypse.'
  3. She is reprising all four of her original characters and teased one unannounced 'mystery character.'
  4. Lange won Emmys for 'AHS' Seasons 1 and 3; she filmed Season 3, 'Coven,' in New Orleans.
  5. She said the cast drove themselves home 'at like 4 or 5 in the morning' in the French Quarter.

Jessica Lange told a PaleyFest panel that FX was "too f—ing cheap" to pay for cars home from the "American Horror Story" set, leaving the cast to drive themselves at the end of shooting days. The Oscar and Emmy winner, now starring in "AHS: 13," said the arrangement remains "a bone of contention" for her (via Entertainment Weekly).

"We had to drive ourselves," Lange said during the panel, seated alongside franchise co-star Sarah Paulson. "We would drive ourselves home at like 4 or 5 in the morning, park on some street in the French Quarter, and find our way home."

Paulson laughed in approval beside her, according to the account.

What happened in New Orleans?

Lange filmed the show's third season, "Coven," in New Orleans. It was there, she said, that FX declined to provide cars or drivers for the series' stars at the time. Neither FX nor series creator Ryan Murphy has publicly responded to the remark, at least in the reporting available.

The network has not disputed the account. It also has not confirmed it. Readers should note the claim rests on Lange's recollection of production conditions from roughly a decade ago.

A return seven years in the making

"AHS: 13" marks Lange's first appearance in the franchise since 2018's "AHS: Apocalypse." Over the show's first four seasons, she headlined as Constance Langdon (Season 1), Sister Jude Martin (Season 2), Cordelia Goode (Season 3) and Elsa Mars (Season 4). She won Emmys for her work in the first and third seasons.

She is playing all four characters again in the new season.

Lange told "Good Morning America" before the season began that reviving those roles was the reason she came back after the hiatus. "It really was just the idea of bringing those four characters back — and one mystery character that I'm not going to [spoil]," she said.

On "Live With Kelly and Mark," she added detail about the negotiation: "First, [Ryan Murphy] talked to me about playing [season 1's] Constance, which I think was his favorite character that I did. But I said I'll come back if I can do all four characters."

What does this change for viewers?

For the audience, nothing directly — the grievance is a labor footnote, not a plot point. But it reframes the show's glossy reputation with a concrete production detail: stars on one of TV's buzziest franchises, in Lange's telling, parked their own cars in the French Quarter before dawn.

The unnamed "mystery character" Lange teased, meanwhile, remains the season's live question. Her return alone has already pulled attention back to a franchise she left in 2018; the complaints about FX suggest the reunion is professional, not sentimental.
