The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in Manchester has named the American conductor Joshua Weilerstein as its next Chief Conductor. He takes up the post in September 2028. He succeeds the Finnish conductor John Storgårds.

Weilerstein is 39. He currently holds two European posts: Chief Conductor of Denmark's Aalborg Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Orchestre National de Lille in France. He is also the brother of the international cellist Alisa Weilerstein, and by all accounts an outgoing personality on the podium.

Who is Joshua Weilerstein?

A conductor working at the double — one orchestra in Denmark, another in France — now adding a third, in Manchester. He arrives with a reputation as, in the words of the announcement, a "born communicator".

Adam Szabo, Director of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, did not hold back in the appointment statement. He said: 'Joshua Weilerstein is a dream signing for the BBC Phil. Loved by the orchestra, Weilerstein is a born communicator; a charismatic and empathetic musical leader who inspires performances of a truly world-class standard.'

Szabo went further on repertoire. 'He is a champion of musical works that have been overlooked by history, and brings an utterly compelling and totally fresh view to the great works of the orchestral canon,' he said.

What does the appointment signal?

The quote carries two claims worth separating. First, that Weilerstein already has the Manchester players' affection — "loved by the orchestra", in Szabo's words, is unusually warm language for an appointment press release. Second, that his programming instincts lean toward neglected repertoire alongside the standard canon (the established core works of the orchestral literature).

That combination — player approval plus a taste for underperformed music — fits the profile of a conductor chosen to refresh an orchestra's identity rather than simply maintain it. Leading the Aalborg Symphony and the Orchestre National de Lille simultaneously, as Weilerstein does, suggests he can juggle institutions and calendars. The BBC Phil adds a British broadcasting platform to that portfolio, with the recording and airtime profile that comes with it.

Why the long wait?

The September 2028 start date leaves a substantial runway — close to two years between announcement and first downbeat (the conductor's opening gesture at the start of a performance). Such gaps are not unusual at the top of the conducting world, where incumbent conductors' contracts and guest schedules are booked years ahead.

Until then, John Storgårds remains in the Manchester chair he has held as chief, and Weilerstein keeps his Scandinavian and French commitments. The real verdict on the "dream signing" arrives in autumn 2028, when Manchester audiences hear for themselves what Szabo's enthusiasm sounds like in the flesh.
