Katey Sagal is coming back to Fox, the network she helped launch in primetime, with a recurring role in the drama series "Best Medicine." Her episodes are set to air later this season, according to the network's announcement.

The casting closes a loop that started nearly four decades ago. Sagal broke through on "Married... With Children," the sitcom that anchored Fox's original primetime lineup in the late 1980s, and later voiced Leela on the network's animated hit "Futurama" (the series now streams on Hulu). Now she returns not as a lead but as a disruptor, in a part built to shake up the show's central family.

Who is Kathleen Gavin?

On "Best Medicine," Sagal will play Kathleen Gavin, described in the network's character breakdown as "Louisa's (Abigail Spencer) estranged mother and the only person in the world who's not welcome in Port Wenn. Combative, conniving, and always looking out for herself, Kathleen unexpectedly returns to town after a long absence, sending Louisa's life into chaos. Martin (Josh Charles) quickly discovers there's a reason why the people of Port Wenn refer to her as 'Shady Katie.'"

The description signals how the show plans to use her. Kathleen isn't a warm reunion figure; she's a catalyst. Her arrival lands mid-season, which typically means the writers are injecting conflict into the Louisa-Martin storyline at a point where the drama needs a new jolt of tension.

What does this change for the show?

In practical terms, it adds a proven primetime draw to a young drama's second act. Sagal carries name recognition with exactly the audience Fox built its brand on, and a recurring arc (a multi-episode guest role rather than a one-off) gives the writers room to develop the mother-daughter rift over time rather than resolve it in a single hour.

Sagal's recent track record

Sagal's recent credits span formats and platforms. They include:

  • "One Piece" — Netflix's live-action adaptation
  • "The Abandons" — the Western series
  • "The Conners" — the ABC sitcom continuation
  • "Rebel" — the ABC drama

She won a Golden Globe for "Sons of Anarchy" and earlier starred in the sitcoms "8 Simple Rules" and "Married... With Children." Next up, she'll appear in the Apple TV comedy "She's Fine."

Her work stretches well beyond television. Film credits include "Trust," "Bleed for This," "Pitch Perfect 2" and "The Good Mother." As a singer, she has released the albums "Well" and "Room." Her memoir, "Grace Notes: My Recollections," was published in 2017 by Simon and Schuster.

Sagal is represented by CAA and B&B Management.

The move pairs a network veteran with a show still building its audience, and the 'Shady Katie' setup suggests Fox wants her provocateur energy on screen for more than a cameo.
